Muhlenbergia...yes!

I'd avoid Carex ("sedges have edges") but consider Deschampsia caespitosa (tufted hair grass) or Nasella tenuissima (formerly Stipa tenuissima, Mexican hair grass). The latter is particularly soft and fluffy in texture.

I have to disagree about sedges. Sedges have edges because they're triangular, not necessarily sharp. While some sedges can cut, many do not. They're too nice to dismiss on whole. Try Blue Zinger, Bowles Golden, or some of the copper colored sedges.

Agreed on Nassella...very soft fine texture...you just can't resist running your fingers through the foliage. Humid summers in GA are tough on Nassella though.

Try a mix of Muhlenbergia capillaris (with pink seedheads) and Muhlenbergia c. White Cloud (white seedheads). Very cool looking together!

Isolepis cernua (fiber optic grass) is really cool looking as well. I saw this grass used in Disney plantings all over the place...often used as hair for character plantings.

Hakonechloa would also be a great grass for shaded areas of the garden, but like Nassella, the humid summers won't be kind to this grass.

If you have time to plant more (lol) try Juncus Big Twister in a container without drain holes. Very crazy grower!

Check out Lagurus ovatus, Bunny Tail's grass. It has soft green foliage, and the flower heads are soft white puffs that feel like a rabbit foot or tail. The kids would probably love them!
