It won't hurt it. Pile a few pine boughs, or some such, over the crown for winter. Not too thick, but enough to catch and hold a canopy of snow over it.

Thanks, Donn. Of course, the pine boughs will give Mr. Bunny a nice place to hide as well. Maybe I'll only cut it to about a foot high, and then in the spring a little lower. What do you think?

That would work as well. Mr. Bunny will, of course, find another place to hang out.

Speaking of rabbits. It reminds me of a funny story.

A few years ago I had a small group of baby bunnies making a home under my front porch and all spring they were feasting on my perennials as they started to sprout. I was REALLY getting peeved and was determined to get these buggers or at least scare the bejezus out of them. So I sat on the front porch one spring afternoon in my favorite chair, with a whiffle ball bat in hand. My wife, wondering where I was finally located me and upon opening the front screen door she asked,

"what the heck are you doing out here...???"

Without missing a beat I slapped the bat into my palm, turned to her and raised my finger to my lips and said...

"Shhhhhhhhh ... be vewy, vewy quiet..... I'm hunting wabbits..."

She just shook her head, chuckled at me and left me to my lunacy, mumbling something about the looney bin.

I never did get those buggers....

you should sit out back with my father sometime :) With him it's squirrels. Drives him crazy. He plants new hosta and daylilies and they come down and dig them up and drag them off every time...he hates them now. I'll have to tell him Elmer suggests a whiffle ball bat ;)
