It's a cool season grass, and is hardy to zone 4. Once established, it should have no problem with full sun and your heat, since it's native to your area. Like many cool season grasses, it may go dormant in the heat of summer.

You'll find information on it under Stipa neomexicana and Stipa pennata var. neomexicana. It can be grown from seed, and there are a few online vendors selling the seed. This may mean it will self-sow in the right conditions.

Don, Thank you for the synonyms. I ran into an article that states they like to be uncrowded and that is why they like ridge lines. I have some places that are difficult because of many fossils and gravely rock. They are not indigenous to my area but west of here in the Big Bend and the LLano Estacado. I also ran into some incredible habitat photos and plant structure photos. CG,if you are out there reading this, you might enjoy these photos. the following 8 or so photos are all about the plant. the ground looks red so that is either decomposed granite or sandstone or a bit of dry clay in the regolith. I might add some decomposed granite.

I may have to order seeds on that one after seeing the picture, I have been tempted a couple of times but it didn't look as appealing in the seed catalog. I was going to place another order for more Feather Dalea anyway (I've had three germinate and then damp off outside in sterile mix so I want to increase my chances of success) and I will just add that to the list.
