new to gourds

Hi all. I am pretty new to the gourd scene. Last year I grew a few ornamentals and birhouses and it was so cool that I expanded this year. I ended up with some nice birdhouses, some really large snakes, dippers (one has an awesome super-long neck), a beautiful Indonesian wine bottle, a few tobacco boxes, and several assorted small ornamentals. A few of the gourds I carved designs into while they were green. The tobacco turned out fabulous, but some of the birdhouses had some "cvve ins" but did not rot. I've been doing some research and looks like I'm going about it the wrong way and I should be burning them when dried? Is there a gourd FAQ or a good place to start to read up? Thanks in advance for help!
