I'm glad you posted about Argonauts. I have not grown them but love Butternut Squashes. I've been curious about them. I've read that they take 120+ days to maturity. Is that correct? If so it's right on the bubble for my zone. In a good year I'd be fine. A year like this past one, I'd have no squash (late spring frost & early fall frost.)

They definately take a long time to produce ripe fruit. 120 is right. But they were well worth it. If you have many critters though I might reccommend something that gets done quicker. We lost two to a groundhog before we dealt with it. He took one bite from each and we didn't notice until they had rotted.

Actually I just looked it up... 140 days. Yeah it's long, but worth it.

I grew them this year and they taste wonderful. I had some fruits over 25lbs but most were in the 10 - 15 lb range. they are very sweet but beware of their rampant growth. I had vines everywhere. probably 40 feet from one end to the other. I will not grow them next year because of that. I prefer the walthams.

I realize the original question is 5 years old, but nobody actually answered the question. Argonaut squash is absolutely the best tasting squash, the plants are incredibly healthy. We had zero disease, zero pests. We grew 47 varieties of squash this year 2013, and Argonaut is my favorite. Other varieties gave few problems here & there, some types never fruited, others the vines died, but my Argonauts grew like champions. They are super huge. We slice off what we want & put rest in refrigerator. Lasts for several meals. Once you taste it, you will fall in love.
