I got soil for my raised beds from Living Earth, it was pretty good. Nature's Way Resources is #1 in Houston, but it's wayy expensive and all the way up in Conroe.

I think Living Earth is fine, but for my next beds I'll order top soil and improve it with homemade compost or do sheet composting with leaves, grass clippings, hay and possibly local manure from horse stables. I don't really trust what those big guys put in their compost.

Welcome to H-town and congrats on the huge garden space!! Let me also suggest Bob Randall's book Year Round Gardening for Houston, available through the community-gardening organization he started, Urban Harvest (urbanharvest.org) It'll save you a lot of headache:-)

Get Soil from Cowboys.. Living Earth's soil has lots of bark in it. And compost still green...

I'm in need of compost also in Houston area. Is Cowboys a brand? Can you buy compost by the sq, yard and know it's not green? If so, where?

I noticed in this series of posts the comments about compost and sources in the Houston areas. I just moved from Dallas to Mississippi, with the idea of starting a chicken litter composting business. Well, I have it started, but only in a small way. We have about 100 tons working right now but are looking to increase our production as finances allow. My question is this. Do you think there is much demand for a good quality, fully composted chicken litter and hardwood saw dust product in the Houston area?

I noticed one post mentioned Nature's Way Resources. I looked at their website and noticed they sell NRG pelletized poultry fertilizer. They are selling it for $23.20/40# bag. I can deliver a composted product with the same/near analysis for less than half that price. Any takers?
