Randy, to the best of my knowledge, snakes don't dig holes. Not sure exactly WHO is leaving all of the holes in your yard, but I think it's safe to say it's not snakes.

I remember being told about various holes in yards/fields, etc as a kid..."Watch out for snakes in there!" I believe this comes from the idea they will inhabit certain holes, sort of using it like a den. I know a one inch hole is not what my parents/grandparents were warning me about though! :)

Please reassure your wife it safe to walk in the yard! :)

Possibly frogs.

It's drier up here but we get rhinocerous beetles and when they emerge, they leave a hole about that size.

The holes could possibly be crawfish holes and the only way I know to get rid of them is with old fashioned mothballs. You drop them in the hole everyother day for a week and they will vacate the place. Certainly not organic but, it does work.

I think they are frogs or toads. I have seen them in the holes looking up at me! I am not sure if they actually make the holes but they sure use them!

Sounds like the 17 year cicada (also called locusts) holes. If you hear any cicadas singing, that's what the holes are from.
