snake holes

hello,

I am not sure who to direct this question. I hope you can help.

I have many small holes (about 1 inch in diameter) in my yard and garden (about 2 acres). I have always been told they were snake holes. Snakes don't dig holes. Do they?

The holes are smooth with little to no dirt around them and dug at an angle (I know what a crawfish hole looks like). Could this be wasp, crickets or some other insect? I know we don't have moles. My wife is scared to death to walk out in the yard. Any suggestions?

Your opinion will be greatly appreciated.

Randy
