In the Gulf south, full sun = 8 hours. Few plants can take our full sun. Morning sun or afternoon sun is preferable unless the plant is well established. Annuals do suffer.

Steve is right!
I had to learn the hard way to add shade to whatever they recommend, like full sun = about a half day or no more than 3/4 of a day of sun and part sun/part shade = mostly shade, just a little sun filtering in here and there or several hours of morning sun. Most recommendations must be for northerners.
There are some plants that can take full sun, but they're just about all trees - pines, red maples, sweet gums, persimmons, wild black cherry, etc. The foundation for Gulf Coast gardening has to be trees! :)

Yep, the majority of plants are bred, and labeled for the mid-part of the country. So full sun in Minnesota is NOTHING like full sun in the South. There is a lot that will take full sun. Most salvias, cacti, some bromeliads, allamanda, cuphea, lemon grass, succulents, bulbine, hibiscus, vines, daylilies, canna, crinums, hymenocallis(spider lilies) all tolerate full sun.

I did a test with some Brugmansia and they prefer filtered sun. Full sun on the coast will not benefit any plant other than a tree I believe. I will drive up your amount of work to keep it alive. Seems if they have a very waxy leaf they can withstand the sun and humidity.

It takes a real tough customer to take our heat. Even cactus prefer a little shade.

The only annuals that I have found to do well in full sun are Vincas.
