While Hellebores are not strictly shade plants, only shade tolerant, they would probably struggle to survive in afternoon sun, being this far south and being planted this late in the year. They require a rather dry and well drained location, which does not make them good companions for Hostas & Ferns, which require a lot of moisture to perform well. These also need protection from afternoon sun.
You definitely do not want to plant Daphne odora in that location. They are a shade plant, but will tolerate some morning sun or a dappled shade location. They also must be planted in a location that has sharp drainage and with the crown exposed above the soil.
I would establish some shade in the area, tree(s) and /or medium sized shrubs before installing those plants you listed.

A thick layer of mulch, 3+ inches, will prevent weed seed germination as well as frabric, is much easier to work with and will decompose, over time, to add nutrients to the soil.
Wouldn't advise placing it around Hostas though, as is is a perfect cover for voles!
