Beach dune sunflower problem

These have been such wonderful low maintance plants for me, but I did have an issue with mold/fungus last year during the rainy session, and it's starting again. I just pruned off a bunch of branches that were wilting and when I got in there, there was lots of white stuff on the leaves.

I'm guessing its from the moisture. It's a really thick plant at this point. I was thinking I would rake out the mulch from under the out-growing branches. Any one have this problem? Have any ideas?

Thanks,

Becca

I don't know about the white moldy looking stuff, but in my experience, beach sunflowers look great for about 1-2 years, and then it's time to pull the plants or mow them down. Then all the little seedlings will have enough sun to germinate and will start a new batch of sunflowers. I love them too!

Beach Sunflowers have low fertilizer requirements. Giving them too much fertilizer makes them prone to funguses.

How odd that I would see this post resurrected today after reading yesterday that 'H. debilis (Beach Sunflower) will develop a fungus if planted in wet areas.' (Source: Florida's Best Native Landscape Plants)

So, yeah, if they're planted in a location that is slow draining or too wet, too often, it will end up developing a fungus. So that's probably the issue for the OP, if they still check in.
