They shouldn't, no. I consider them pretty much evergreen, although they do get cut back at various times, depending on species or hybrid. Perhaps your summer is too hot for them? x hybridus doesn't seem to appreciate really hot dry weather, but H. argutifolius, aka Corsican hellebore, will thrive in even very hot, droughty conditions. But then my PNW zone 8 is vastly different from a Texas zone 8.

Most H x hybridus do not, but several species do, particularly in hot weather. Most of them are less common in gardens (H. vesicarius, H. thibetanus, H. hercegovinus et al). I have many species that begin to have yellow and brown coloration by midsummer. Do you know the name of the hellebore in question?

All I know It's Helleborus x Hybrids mix Lenten Rose
