You can scoop the pulp and seeds from the shell and put them through a juicer. The resulting juice is decent, especially if you add some lime juice and a bit of sugar or honey to it. It is a little muciligenous just like juice with some banana in it.

Basically, I don't think anyone eats them very much, they mostly use them for garnish.

I think you'll find them very easy to grow and productive. I grew some years ago and got several bushels off of a few vines.
