This year, due to lack of snow cover, my leaves were all crunchy. On several, I yanked 'em off. That hurt.

But they look good now.

Yup, same as Melissa. Some fared better than others and didn't have to pull so many leaves. A couple I had to lift and reset in the ground because they were getting too leggy.

I have always had a problem with my heuchera with intruding creeping charley and grasses. When I try to pull them I pull up way too many pieces of these gems. It does hurt Melissa.

Can I root the small pieces I pull out?

I start grooming in March when they start to perk up. On a few plants I removed about 2/3 of the old leaves and they didn't seem to mind.

So,Karen, when they get leggy do you just replant them deeper? The buried stems don't rot?
And Les -- I have had pretty good luck with just poking those broken off bits into a pot; most of them root and prosper.

I was just out pulling off scraggly old leaves and broke off several crowns :( lesson learned to use clippers/shears or leave the scraggly old leaves.

I cut old leaves in the spring and trim off any ugly leaves later on. But always with scissors so as not to tug the plant unless they are dry, crispy and easy to just take off.
