They may not be getting enough sun per their being spindly. Can you tell if they've gone root bound inside of the containers?

I don't think they're root bound. They get about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine per day, unfiltered. I'm hoping that's enough.

Sometimes they do that, especialy if they get too wet. I just pulled a bunch like that because my neighbors sprinklers were getting to them too much.

To me It's just part of the life cycle. The plant grows huge,eventually gets spindly and I pull it out. Then a new one pops up somewhere.

I've been fighting spider mites in this dry weather.

So maybe they prefer a dry soil to a moist? The plants are quite young yet, a few months old. Do they like as much fertilizer as large tomato varieties?
