I had an ornamental passiflora that I let grow up a pine tree. This was a 30-foot tree. The vine was nice for awhile, then began to take over the tree and the tree was suffering for it.... it cut out the light, and was causing the branches to bend under its weight. I cut the vine out before it killed my tree, and I wouldn't try it again... the passiflora is just too vigorous!
I would grow a passion fruit vine on a trellis or better yet, a pergola -- you can access the fruit and control the vine that way.

I have had no problem with the passion flower on my pine. But then the cats ate the whole thing last year. This year it has come back. I have to guide it around the tree as it just wants to vine across the top of nearby bushes instead of going up the tree. If it gets too tall and the cats don't get to it, I plan on just cutting it back.

I have plans of putting my Queens Wreath around my Queen's Crepe Myrtle. I figure the tree will lose leaves in the winter so the vine will make a nice decoration on a leafless tree.

I've got bleeding heart vine growing up a crape myrtle, a passionvine growing up a livistonia palm and had a cypress vine on another crape myrtle. Unfortunately the cypress vine didn't come back this year. I'm thinking of trying the glory bower there next. I wouldn't have dared try it until I saw the beautiful vines that Tom (the butterfly guy) had growing up into his trees.
