I am surprised to see that you have not had a response from anyone on Maui yet. I have lived here on O'ahu most of life, but originally from Oregon.
The weather in Hawaii is fairly constant with some mild climate changes throughout the year. Hey, even the rain is warm! But you will hardly, if ever, experience what is really considered as "cold" weather, unless you will be moving on top of Halekala, which I doubt.
Also, try to get to know and understand the people here. There are a number of ethnic groups with their individual cultures and foods, such as Japanese, Chinese, African-American, Causasian, Samoan, Korean, Spanish, Hawaiian, Filipino, Tongan, Chuukese, Portuguese, Thai, Loatian, Marshallese, Vietnamese, and many others, including a vast combination of the above. It would not be unusual to speak with someone with a Hawaiian, Chinese, German, French and Korean background. Or, one with a Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese background.
While you're here I would suggest try to visit each of the other main islands (Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, the Big Island Hawai'i, and perhaps Lana'i) at least once. Each has unique set of flora and fauna as well as sites to see. There are also a number of native plant gardens to check out. If you come to O'ahu, let me know and I can help you find some excellent gardens with native and exotic plants. Maui itself has some nice gardens and natural areas to visit. Hi! Just saw your posting on the Hawaii forum. I also moved here to Maui two years ago, and live in Kehei. The island is very varied as to climate, my area is hot and dry, I wonder where you are planning (or have moved to)?
I have a half acre, which was pretty much overgrown when we bought our home, and we have spent a lot of time reading up on local flora to make sure that we are not destroying anything through ignorance. We have lots of fruit trees and are enjoying the tropical bounty. Good luck with your move and e-mail me when you land! Jenny
