Yes I am. It is also called firebush. I have seeds if you want them but cuttings would be faster at this time of year if there is someone growing it nearby you.
I saw one hummingbird interested in it but he/she never returned. I haven't seen any hummingbirds in my community but I have planted things to tempt them.
I got my plants at orange box store.

You can propagate with tip cuttings. I went out the first year and carefully pruned it and shaped it then found out it's MUCH better to take the saw to it and whack it way back in the winter, otherwise it gets enormous.

I have seen butterflies on it and although we rarely seem to see hummingbirds we have had them. Mostly zebra butterflies though.

These are not very expensive. I found a dwarf variety at Lowe's for less than $10. You might want to check it out.

Cliff-you solved your firebush question! YAY

Wow these are really common up here. For sale everywhere in the perennial depts, as cheep as $4.99

I think this is what Coffeemom was taking cuttings of back in Feb, but I ddin't take any.

There's a really nice one at the Steak and Ale up the street. LOL

Oh No Cliff, you going scavengering again? lol

Regarding the dwarf firebush: I was told by a knowledgeable nurseryman that it is a different plant and does not attract the butterflies and hummers the way the standard firebush does.
I think scavenging is the best idea at this time of year. My community has wonderful trees and plants that wouldn't be hurt by a cutting taken. I am headed for the Royal Poinciana tree tomorrow.

We always called that "shopping at the Midnight Garden Supply"!

Occasionally when my neighbors don't trim their trees over the sidewalks, the Midnight Pruning Company comes by and helps them shape their trees a little better.

OOOOhhh Kate I like your way of keeping the neighborhood trimmed!

LOL.... That's how I got some plumies last year in winter..when it got dark early. LOL

My firebush 'tree' (it was a shrub a couple years ago) has many little plants suckering from its roots.
I've started several just pulling them up with some roots attached.
    They grow very easily.
They never seemed to look very good in pots, but as soon as they hit the native soil they take off by leaps and bounds.
During the fall and winter I always see hummingbirds in that tree in the early morning and late afternoon.

    Treefrog,

I'd love to see a pic of yours if you have one.

    Thanks, Cliff

I finally found one..well, 4 at Wally World but I bought only 1 for now. $3.50 for a 1 gallon.

Anyone remember or know what that invasive vine is that has rhizomes like Ginger but with thorns?? I have dug out a 1/2 bushel of the stuff and still digging. I don;t want to plant something in this spot and then it be overtaken by this stinking thing.

Taking a break right now. It got overcast really quick and hoping for a drop or two.

Tropicalfreak~ I don't care for the dwarf as much as the native either. It grows rather sprawly (didn't that sound technical? LOL!) I like the upright appearance of the native and I also would have to agree that the zebra longwings go for the native more also! Plant a subarosa passie near it or rather in the shade of it and bingo~ instant zebra LW garden!

Anyone have pics of it growing in their landscape/yards?? Will it grow taller than a privacy fence? I am hoping. *crossing fingers*

I am thinking of putting mine between a Crape Myrtle and a Purple Bougainviella. If I can get all of that viney stuff with thorns and those rhizomes like Ginger.

If anyone knows what "it" is, please let me know. I would hate for it to use the Firebush as a Trellis.

    Thanks, Tropicalfreak

Sorry, no picture but ours can get 8 to 10 feet tall and almost that wide while being fairly thick - you're not going to see through it easily. Floridata says 12 feet while IFAS bulletin says to 15 and agrees that it can be 8 - 10 feet in width. I didn't realize they could get so big when we got this one as I'd always seen them smaller. We bought two and one died, this one has been with us for years. It doesn't get to be 12 - 15 feet because we cut it back in the winter. Definately 8 - 10 feet.

Tropicalfreak those things with tubers are probably bamboo briars. they vine & have black berries on them that the birds scatter every where. they are surely a pest & the only way to get rid of them is to dig them up. hope this helps Rene

    Rene09,
Thanks for the info on that stuff. Will finish diggig tomorrow evening.

Thanks everybody on the Firebush info. I love everything about this shrub.

Wish I would've taken that certain someone up on their offer of cuttings back in the year.

    Oh crap!

I looked at the tag a saw it is a "DWARF" Firebush.

Guess I'll be scouting Lowes' and Home Depot's. Bummed that I have the dwarf now. : (

Anyone growing this one, notice if it is less drought/sun tolerant?

    Thanks,

    How much?

    Cliff

    Hi Kat,

Yes, I think I have been there..or driven thru. You live in the area? Liked it up there. Seems so peaceful and quiet compared to down here.

    I am off tomorrow.

Let me know the "drop off point"...lol

    Cliff,
Kat lives about 5 miles from me.
If you're up this way stop by.
We can all have miracle fruit lemonade or limeade.
I'm sure there are little firebushes under my big bush.
And I know there are coral vines sprouting here and there too.

Mailed you a package on Friday.
