Hello, I saw a beautiful tree in someones' garden in Kihei and I asked them what it was. The homeowner told me it was a Fiji Island hibiscus, and was quite hard to find. It was growing in full sun and had been trained to a tree. It was about 8 feet tall and beautiful, loaded with blossom. Sorry I don't have more info, I can't seem to find the name in my gardening book, perhaps it's a local name.

Well Joe - could you please share what you learned ? That's why this is a forum - so we can all learn from various responses.

It has been so long since I had a response to this, I had forgotten about it.

You asked for an update, so here goes.

I now have two of the Fiji Island Hibiscus. One gets some sun in the morning but is mostly in the shade. The other gets mid-day sun for a few hours. Both bloom but not as often as I would like. They need more fertilizer.

Both also suffer with erinose, as do most of my hibiscus. My yard maintence man has found a new product that helps and new uneffected leaves appear in a week or so after spraying. The problem has just come back after about four months so we are spraying again.
