No, you can't root a leaf. You need a portion of the main stem to grow it. The leaves won't be super shiny, except when they first come out. If they get too dusty, though, you should give it a rinse in the shower or sink.

I've got one of these too, and it's been growing happily in my bathroom for about a year and a half, but although it's had new leaves, it won't rebloom. An anthurium grower friend tells me it should give one flower for every new leaf (unless it's too dark, but I have it under a skylight), so I'm not too sure what's going on there...

I do have the main stem of the leaf and I've put it in water but nothing so far yet, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. I just bought mine at a local nursery this summer. I've gotten a good number of leaves on mine (lost count) and I've also just had a new flower open up. My lava is sitting on a window sill and I give it distilled water.
