maybe try away from the foundation if its concrete or stone which really holds the cold and frost. That could be whats doing them in..Also if concrete you have lye in cement.

I always heard that planying near the foundation was the thing to do with plants thar might be a little tender.Palms and bananas and canna are usually planted close to the house when you are trying to zonepush. the closer to the house, the warmer the soil. I too have lost a few hibiscus. It seems that after 3/4/5 years the base is quite large and the next year - nothing.

Since I have started dividing the plants up I haven't lost any. I would dig the whole plant up and then replant a couple of stems/roots and the plant keeps on going.

I haven't lost any in about 6 years now.
