I'm not exactly sure of the design you are looking for. But you might have to go through the japanese garden style until you find exactly what you are looking for. You can also google asian garden design.

I tried japanese terraced gardens and had several hits. That may be the best way to go. Good luck with your back yard.

I haven't created (japanese) step garden (expensive) but have plants loads of plants on the hill last year...lets see how many come up this year.
