I can't answer you question but birch trees also provide a tasty syrup. We used to tap them up in Alaska. Birch sap is not as concentrated (that is, out of the tree) as maple sap but I prefer the taste.

That's good to hear too, it's worth a try. Some monster birch trees in the area too. I do remember them letting out a massive amount of water when pruning at the wrong time of year, I guess this boils down to syrup- Thanks, will try.

Please try it and let us know the results next spring. I too have a couple of non sugar type maples.
I wouldn't know how to tap them or how long to boil the sap.

There are some sites I found searching the internet, that tell how to tap Acer macrophyllum-Big leaf maples. It will likely need to say macrophyllum in the search.
So it is very possible to get a syrup from these trees, it has a slightly smaller percentage of sugar- but this can be dealt with by extra time boiling. Something like 42 litres to make 1 lite syrup!
It also reccomends boiling syrup outdoors, as the steam is sticky, gets on the walls.
Can't wait until tapping season!

I have a few Silver Maples in my yard. These were planted around new houses (back when my house was new) because they grow quickly. They also drop a lot of branches. However, I've tapped them a couple of times.

Supposedly the sap is more dilute than that of a sugar maple, but I have no experince with Sugar Maple sap, so I don't know. I boiled down a gallon or so of sap to make a cup or so of syrup. It tasted great.

On the scale I did it, it was a fun project for me and the kids, and we ended up with a meal of two worth of syrup.

someone please tell me how to tap a tree.....i want to try my maples...that was one of them things i never ask my grandparents! thanks a lot

I found quite a few good sites on it doing a search on google.

A local "syrup-maker" in my area told me that you can tap any variety of maple to get sap for syrup. She also told me she once made syrup from the sap of an apple tree!
I would like to try tapping, too as I live in a woods of moslty maple trees. May have to get searching for info...
