As you can see, the Mother plant leaves have a lighter stripe on them. The fruit's leaves on top have a light red stripe.
Sorry Sumala, didn't have a prop for the size but lets say the fruit is small.
Also noticed that the leaves are more smooth than the Dole that I grow from the grocery store.

I would still love to know where to get one of those unusual pineapple plants.

Well, we have an answer as to where Ron got it! He wrote this morning and said they got it off of QVC and it was called "Obama Pineapple".
I sent him a link to this thread and he said he didn't know he had started such a stir. ;-)

All the pineapples we've started in this neighborhood from grocery store trimmings are this color until they ripen. Are you sure this isn't just a regular pineapple? Could Ron be kidding about the name?

Kate, if you saw this in person you would know it is black! Look at the Mama's leaves, they have a strip on them. The dole doesn't. Also the leaves don't have alot of teeth. He said when he get's home he will look up the order.

I am from Antigua and this pineapple is called the Antigua Black Pineapple. It turns yellow when ripe and has a distinct sweet smell(and taste). I have one of these plants at home and will try to post a picture later today.

I looked at my black antigua pineapple plant the other day, don't remember noticing any striped leaves. Obama pineapple is just some name QVC threw onto it. Looks neat regardless, let us know how it tastes.

After some googling, it is a 'royal hawaiian' pineapple. There is multiple 'royal hawaiian' pineapples, I have a different, but very tasty version, but here are some links of the QVC royal hawaiian:
