JAVA issues with this website

Howdee all,

For quite some time now I've noticed that when I visit this site from a new browser, as in as a 'virgin', pop-up windows inform me that their security certificate is expired.

Now I'm finding that if I have JAVA disabled in my web browser, as all the security nuts (including our Gov't) have been hollerin' about for over a week, that I cannot log in here.

This JAVA security thingy is actually not just your average internet scare. My wife's computer was attacked via that vector last week and I had to spend over a day recovering all.

Sooo, for now, I'm going to hafta go back and disable it on all systems here.

C y'all, mebbe, someday, when things are safe to play again.

I can still MONITOR, so watch what ya say, hey? TEEHEE.

    hh,

I had received a valid warning that there is a very significant virus associated with using Java. I received a notice from Norton security that their protection covered this problem

If you do not have antivirus protection you should disable Java completely as it could lead to big problems.

Yes, after the original problem with the newest version of Java popped up in the news, a fake window showed up for a free JAVA update with an imbedded virus or malware, I did not klick on that. I never changed anything. I have no problems running Firefox and have run anti-virus and anti-malware software since then.

I never had a problem either. I found out about it in a legitimate news site. A few trusted sources verified there was a big problem as well.

It would be prudent to check with your antivirus provider and ask specifically about the potential JAVA threat. If you don't have antivirus protection...get it.

My husband programs in Java for a living.
I asked him about it and he said that yes, it's a problem, but not generally in trusted sites. Nonetheless, I disabled Java here in google Chrome and am having no issues with running Gardenweb.

I disabled Java here in Chrome, and also uninstalled it in IE9. No problems here in Garden Web. Occasionally in other sites I get to see get only the Java teacup, and if it is a trusted site I allow them to run it.

Why is java used and how do you know if you have it? I have NO clue?

If you run Windows, click the start button, Control Panel, and search "Java". If you have it installed, it will appear. Or just look around the Control Panel listings, you'll probably see it listed. The easiest way to fix it is just going to the Java website and downloading the newest version. It's free and has the security hole plugged. After the new Java is installed, uninstall any old versions using "Programs and Features", also located in the Control Panel. You do have to know which version of Windows you run (64 or 32 bit?) before you know which Java to download- go to Start, Computer, System Properties.
