Top Ten Picks

My top ten favorites picks. Ok, I have been mulling this around. I have not

had my daylilies long enough to judge good garden performance or not. So I

am just going to choose based on blooms that I liked exceptionally much.

Next year I might do this completely differently.

MAN OF SORROWS by Karol Emmerich. The most beautiful daylily bloom I have

ever seen. New in my garden this spring. It bloomed and it now has a rebloom

scape.

MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE. Just as beautiful as MAN OF SORROWS. Each bloom was

perfect and stunning. Too new again to say much else except that I did plant

it last year and it had no problems overwintering.

PURIFY MY HEART by Phil Korth. My favorite Korth daylily and I have afew. So

often you see pictures of daylilies looking like they have white backgrounds

and then when it blooms its cream at best and disappointing. Not so with

PURIFY MY HEART. White and pink, just stunning.

GRACE LIKE RAIN. Pretty much ties with PURIFY my Heart for my favorite

Korth. When this daylily bloomed for the first time, I could not believe

something so lovely was not one of the southern bells and came out of a far

north beading program. All my Korth daylilies only planted this spring.

PANDORA'S TREASURE. Stunning, stunning intro from Bill Maryott. I have

nothing else that looks even remotely like it. Planted last year.

Overwintered beautifully.

IN STYLE. I have many Maryott intros but just love the flower on this one.

It just really appeals to me. Again, planted last year and overwintered

beautifully.

FOX POINT by Brian Culver. Also new this spring. One of those instant

rebloom ones but so far it hasn't rebloomed. I am picking it anyway as I

just love this daylily.

SOMETHING ANGELIC. New but the flowers just stopped me in my tracks.

LYRRICAL BALLAD by Melanie Mason. I have lots of new to me intros of

Melanie's planted this spring and they are truly a joy. This one was one

that looked good to me in pictures but when it actually bloomed in the

garden, I was just struck by how much I loved it. Big flower and plenty of

them.

SILVER LININGS by Mary Jane Meadows. Stunning, stunning deep purple with

white edges. Just has that wow factor. Went thru the winter here just great

POSSESSION OF OBSESSION by Paul Owen. A deep solid shimmering purple.

Beautiful. New this spring.

I know, I can't count but I can't take anything off this list.

Now if I use the AHS guidelines that if they are in my garden, they should

have overwintered here, I would have a different list. That is why I haven't

posted my choices. They really are not based on anything except lovely

flowers and my belief that they will do well here for me.

And where is our picture of MAN OF SORROWS rebloom flower?

Sounds like you really have some great looking daylilies.

Uh... hello?? Where are all the pictures to go along with these juicy details??? Especially Purify My Heart! I have been thinking on that one... I got Clouds of Kisses, but waiting for it to bloom - supposed to be like PMH.

Aw, heck Rita, are you going to make me go to Tinker's to see these?

    Hi Rita,
Now I'm dying of curiosity. Tinkers only had photos of Malaysian Marketplace (wow!) Something Angelic and Possession Obsession.

Oh, I did not realize I was supposed to post a picture of each also. Will do that later tonight after I finish my garden chores.

Jean, MAN OF SORROWS has a rebloom scape but no flowers open as yet. Same for those other Emmerich rebloom scapes from the other thread. Buds too small to be open yet. But they will open and then I will take pictures.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... give us something to lust after!! I have been seriously thinking about getting that Malaysian Marketplace... but have no more room until I dig another bed. And admit to the BF that I need more room! :o)

    Rita,

I know you have posted pics of all of these (mostly because your pics made me add a few to my list--especially Grace Like Rain... twice!), but it would be great to see them in conjunction with your list too.

I have often wondered what I would do if all of the sudden I had to give up all of my DL's or roses and select only a few. Each time I walk the yard it seems like I am saying "Oh, I just love that one!!".

If I had to choose from my daylilies, most would be chosen for overall garden performance from some of the older ones that I have had for several years. I have had some drop dead gorgeous blooms on some newer plants that I hope will make the list in the next few years, but no matter how stunning a bloom is, it is hard for a single to compete with a plainer sister that is covered with blossoms.

    That list would include:

BLACK PLUSH -- Definitely not a standout bloom singly, but it will take your breath away in a clump.

CHERRY EYED PUMPKIN -- Lovely as a single as well as a clump, and I can always count on it to have 5+ flowers blooming at a time--ususally double that.

FORBIDDEN DREAMS -- Stunning as a single and always full of blooms.

GIFT FROM HEAVEN -- I absolutely love this huge flower and it's ever-changing watermark.

MASK OF ETERNITY -- Again a very nice flower that is always packed with blooms.

PRICKLED PETALS -- Full of very unique and lovely blooms.

OUTRAGEOUS -- Always full of blooms and glows enough to grab your eye from across the yard. There is no question that that flower fits it's name!

SWIRLING SPIDER -- I am not a big spider fan, and this one's colors are fairly plain, but it is just huge and always full of blooms. It is always one of the first blooms in my garden, and is still blooming on 5 re-bloom scapes for me today. (Until this year, this is the only plant that has ever rebloomed for me.)

TUSCAWILLA TIGRESS -- Huge, glorious flowers and packed with showy flowers through it's long bloom period.

YAZOO ELSIE HINTSON -- This is a plain creamy yellow, yet there is nothing plain about it. Enormous flowers --every bit the 8" that it lists at -- on very tall stalks, and a very long bloom period.

I will add one final to the list which is one of my new ones from last fall, but the flower is so stunning and it has treated me with many more than my typical new plant does:

PAINTING THE ROSES RED -- There is not another red that I have seen that comes close to this color, and the form and accents are perfect.

Overall though, I am very glad that I will never have to be forced to choose!

I think I would go nuts if I had to get rid of my daylilies. I like them far too much for that. Fortunately they get to stay :-))

Interesting how much different your list is from mine. But I have been reading the lists of peoples picks on the AHS e-mail robin and they are all different there too.

The list I actually voted on at the AHS site was not the same list. Since they want the daylilies to have overwintered it knocked my favorite flowers list right out the window.

    The AHS list was-
    CHINA BRIDE
    SUSAN WEBER
    PANDORA'S TREASURE (one both lists)
    IN STYLE (on both lists)
    CONDILLA
    ALL FIRED UP
    SILVER LININGS (on both lists)
    ROCKET CITY
    SPELLBINDER
    KING GEORGE

The others were put in for all around great garden preformance plus I really do like them. Then KING GEORGE I do not have but saw it this summer in at least three of the gardens I toured. Flipped for it each time. I intend to get it for myself. Going to do the pictures for my top ten now in next post.

Those are some spectacular photos, Rita, especially the one of Malaysian Marketplace (one on my top 10 right now).

Ten stunners indeed. MAN OF SORROWS reminds me a lot of Munson's LEXINGTON AVENUE. I especially love your first photo of MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE. I love that the watermark color matches the sepals. PURIFY MY HEART, GRACE LIKE RAIN and SOMETHING ANGELIC really appeal to me too.

Wow, what a stunning collection when they are all in one post! From the pictures I would have a hard time choosing between Grace Like Rain, Purify My Heart, and Malaysian Marketplace. I would love to be able to see them all in person! I will be excited to see what they do for you next year as well.

Thanks for taking the time to post them.

Rita, I am so glad you brought these to my attention! I fell in love with ALOT of them on their website. Next summer I will definitely be making a trip up there. They are just north of Green Bay, which is about 2.5 hr drive for me. Hopefully, I will be able to afford them by then! I've spent way too much this year already.

What website? Are you talking about Phil Korths Pinewood Gardens?

I got to thinking about my top ten this year. There were lots of daylilies that didn't get into the running because they didn't have a bloom that showed well, or had a slug chew or some other problem. Mostly those you could see that they really would be wonderful in the future. I just can't immmagine how I will pick a top ten list next year. I think I will cheat and make different catagories for different top ten lists.

Have decided that ten just will not do has to be the top fifty at least... lol. visited Korths about a month ago and his seedling beds are FANTASTIC. Phil and his wife have some exciting new babies
and some of the babies have babies. It all just takes your breath away. Just bought Painting the Roses Red... it's so wonderfully toothy. also Flame Resistant a new Hensley intro it positively glows with the orange veining.
Sorry to say tho... I have contracted the deadly Daylily sickness, I have to stop looking cause I buy buy buy.
