Sounds great! but what about us little people who dont have a hoya to trade?

well, I would certainly like to send cuttings when I am able.

Most of my Hoyas are all newly received and newly potted.

My goal is to SHARE cuttings once these are stable and get a bit bigger, but I do have one compacta I can take a few small (and I do mean small) cuttings from.

Well it's a nice idea, but here's the 1st problem already (sorry to rain on a good parade). Naming:

PB, pls. note H. Compacta (aka Hindu rope) & H. Holliana are 2 DIFFERENT Hoyas (Holliana is a form of carnosa, but not a compacta). While there's always gonna be SOME name confusion, I'm disclined to swap where name confusion rears its ugly head right out of the gate.

2nd Problem: small cuttings of Lacunosa & Curtisii are unlikely to travel well (said from experience). Anything like a 2 node cutting of these is not likely to make it (not sure if it's cause these are more moisture loving Hoyas than most), but that's been my experience. So sorry.

My Holliana was sold to me as a "compacta" by a Hoya grower in April. It has been compact so far - 96% of the leaves are the size of my thumbnail.

One weird thing about this plant -- four leaves on one vine are PINK. They are almost translucent -- no green at all. These pink leaves do look more like a normal Carnosa in size and shape.

Other than the leaves on that one pink area, the rest of the plant is staying pretty much compact, variegated medium green w/ white or white with medium green, with twisty, and curving leaves/vine.

What about carefully wrapping Lacunosa and Curtisii in wet paper? I received a cutting of each of these. They were a bit dried out when they arrived, but they are doing fine now.

Remember everyone -- we want to keep our HAVES and WANTS list to *only two plants*. So choose two you have, and think of two you want and list those. I don't want to give newbies a long list of haves and wants to start out with. If we are successful with a 2-plant round-robin, later we can do more.

We can keep Lacunosa and Curtisii out of it if you all wish, but my Holliana really does seem to be a compacta, at least so far.

hey way i see it is i just got my first hoya starts. and broke down and purchased one at lowe's (hey they sent me a $10 card for use on purchases over $25. i needed stuff so the hoya was practically free! I spent $33.00 and change originally including the hoya and with the card i paid only $23.00 and change!)-it was tangled up with another hoya and both were totally dry. i could only get one but am hoping to go back in a day or 2 and look for the other. i cannot remember its name but it had tiny leaves. My hoyas are small except for 2 i think..so the cuttings i send will be rather small also....if i want to know the name of something i have i can look for it or wait years and years for it to bloom and look it up then lol! not a problem for me.

I see what Pirate Girl is saying and I agree- you may have gotten cuttings, let's say of lacunosa, that did fine, but they probably went from whoever you got them from directly to you. In a round robin, the box is going to be in circulation for a few weeks, at the least, and you will lose some things because of this.

It is better to have as many people as you can, and for at least most of them to have a good assortment with alot of varieties. Most hoya people already have carnosas and pubicalyx, and some of the more common hoyas, so having mostly those to offer isn't so great because no one is going to want them, except maybe real newbies who won't have anything to put back in the box.. Variety is the most important thing with these things.

Just some things to keep in mind if you want to do this.

good point......being a newbie didnt think about the box going around and around. whoever got the box last would likely have some dead plants and maybe nothing they want.........swap instead of robin maybe?

Oh my! My apologies. NOW I understand what the problem is.

Apparently, my definition of "round robin" is not what is generally understood in the forum!

Where I grew up a "round robin" was basically a group of people gathered into a circle. They paired up for a given activity. Ideally the circle kept going until each person had paired up with every other person in the circle.

I have never heard of a round robin where a mailed box actually travels around the country from person to person!

In any case, a single box traveling across the country was not what I had in mind when I suggested a 'round robin' -- of course you are right - Hoya cuttings would not travel well in a case like that.

I was envisioning people in a circle - i.e., the "round" part.

I have no idea where "Robin" comes into it! LOL :)

SO -- to clarify for anyone who wants to join in. Let's forget about calling this a 'round robin'. Here is what I envisioned in the beginning. Let's say I am a person in the group:

1) I list 2 haves and 2 wants to the circle of participants in Sept 2006

2) I find someone in the circle who wants a cutting that I have, and I send it to them

3) I find someone in the circle who has a cutting that I want, and they send it to me

) I list 2 haves and 2 wants in March 2007, and we go again.

4) Everyone in the group hopefully receives and sends out at least one small cutting in each round. The idea was to get newbies involved so that they would get cuttings, and in the next round hopefully will have gained or grown enough to send cuttings to others. In the case where a newbie has no cuttings to send, they would send postage.

No large cuttings would be planned for unless someone gets really ambitious about sending.

The idea being that it in invoked every six months or so. Each person will end up sending and receiving each time we invoke the list. As we go along, newbies will be growing and able to send cuttings of their own in later rounds.

Does that make sense?

im in my first one and the package hasnt made it to me yet! but is a good idea for seed trades!
otherwise i think im still confused
so if i was interested in hoya publicalyx then i could get georgette to send to me.....well if we do it that way what if someone sends both their cuttings out and no one sends to them?
i dunno. lol this is a good way to get it worked out though. and make sure everyone gets something they are wanting. When we get all the details worked out we can start a new post or something if we need to......... so like if you wanted some of my hoya tricolor i would send to you right?
