Archboldiana tips

So I've had an H archboldiana for a couple years; got it from Logees, I think. It mopes through the winter with a couple leaves and then perks up when it goes out on the deck in the summer. I just acquired the Wennstrom/Stenman book and it says 'avoid bending the new shoots downward as it will kill the stem tip'. I've got the thing trained around a small ring. Is this why I keep losing chunks of the plant, that I'm tying it to the ring with the tips pointing down? Should I just wind it up a post or something instead? Anybody else had experience with this? Thanks.
