hello, i am in 10b as well (Hollywood FL)

if i may be so straightforward, our soil (sand) sucks for most veggies (its great for mango trees).

onions require fertile and well balanced soils, and our sandy soil leeches it out too quickly, especially during rainy season, making raised beds the best option

i plant all of my veggies in wooden box beds and use %75 home depot compost ($1.75 a bag) and %25 native sand soil so it doesnt become muck.

The soil in this area is actually pretty good. I've grown lots of tomatoes and melons in the ground there, and even the occasional carrot. I'm just too lazy for raised beds and bags of dirt.

Can you describe the 'funny' taste? Soapy? Bitter?

Sometimes my onions get some kind of disease & start to die - they get a pinkish rot(fusarium?) & when I tried to salvage the 'good' parts, they had a soapy, spoiled onion taste.....

Or they could be wild onions.

they don't taste soapy. and they weren't rotten or soft at all. They just don't taste like onions. No onion taste or smell whatsoever. And they have a bitter kind of poison taste.

Ugh, why do I even ask. I clearly tried to get the dear, patient boyfriend to eat something poisonous.

he is amazingly patient with all my experiments. I planted radishes which he claimed to love, but I suspect they were so hot he couldn't really eat them. I'm always expecting to find spit-out food wrapped in a napkin, like a little kid with his broccoli, because I present stuff I grew in the yard as pure ambrosia and he just sweetly agrees.

I will need to be careful not to poison him with weeds. It must be a weed. An onion, even a not very good one, would have at least a little bit of an onion smell, right?

I realize how old these comments are, but I I'm having the same exact problem, it smelled just like an onion until I cut it and now has no smell and no taste really it was also super tiny. Just wondering if you ever figured out what it was causing the issue or if anybody else can help me out I would really appreciate it.
