Blue Ginger

I was recently at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota and fell in love with blue ginger. Is anyone growing it? Any tips or advice about growing it? I still have to find some, though... Thanks!

    I got a starter plant from www.glasshouseworks.com

So just how old are you? LOL

I would be interested in tips on how to grow it also. I have managed to kill two of them! One did not grow at all, so I got another seedling, put it in a different light location and it didn't like me either.I'm afraid to try number 3.

Thanks for the info, I was hoping to be able to find it locally, though... I'm 25, but it's been years since I updated my page so things might have changed : )

Hi YankeeFan1996, I'm a Bronx girl myself. I just had to ask cause I thought maybe you thought we were all senior citizens (I'm 39 for the past couple of years). LOL.

Well, my little plant looks very happy and if it continues to grow I'd be happy to share some with you.

Nice to have you join us

When I first joined I think I was 21 and Mark (who's since moved) and I were the youngest members. I haven't been posting much the past couple years and I know a lot of new and possibly younger members have joined. I'm mainly a lurker these days - not as much time on my hands anymore : ) I'm from Long Island, but moved down here when I was 17. Thanks for the offer to share - if I can't find any around here I might take you up on that! : )

I have it growing in a big pot I stuck under some trees. It gets partial shade and I don't do much to it. I pretty much forget about it during the winter. I do water it daily in the summer because it is in a pot. I will probably cut the pot and let it spill out onto the ground this year. I don't do much with my gingers except provide shade and, water in the summer. Not a fussy plant.

I have it growing in a lot of shade under an oak tree. I find it needs a lot of water and regular fertilizing and I don't think it likes too much sun. It is not a true ginger, so it will propagate from a cutting, you don't need any rhizome. Glasshouse Works and Kartuz sell it.

It's related to wandering jew, and is not a true ginger at all. Put it in part shade and ignore it. it's easy as pie. Though the stems can be brittle, so give it some wind shelter.
The more sun, the more bloom, the more shade, the better the foliage.

I have tried it twice and couldn't get it to grow. ;o( It got a virus or some mold and died. WAAAAAA!

Where do you live yankeefan? I have some cuttings in pots that while not real big yet are rooted. I say cuttings but they're really 'knock-offs' compliments of my darn dogs. If I'd known so many people were interested I'd have felt like I had something to offer at a plant swap!!

I'm in NW Port Charlotte, right below the Sarasota county line. If you're not too far away maybe we can have our own plant swap : ) I have Simpson Stoppers, Coonties, Purple Porterweed, Fakahatchee Grass, Lemon Grass, Blackberry Lilies... I'm sure there's more but that's about all I can think of right now.

For those interested, Biosphere has blue ginger for sale here in the Orlando/Winter Garden area. It's just beautiful and I hope to get some soon. He had one gallon and three gallon containers. The one gallon size was $5.
