more critters

I was outside late yesterday afternoon (between rain storms) working on the rock border of one of my flower beds when I found a snake under one of the rocks. It was such a cute little ring neck snake that I had to catch it so that I could take a picture (much to the snake's displeasure!).

Here's a couple more recent garden visitors.

Preying Mantis

Can anyone tell me what kind of moths these are?

Oh, I LOVE your little ringneck snake. So pretty! And so tiny! The smallest one I ever saw was about the size of an average earthworm. It was just a baby.

Love the mantis, and the cat MIGHT be for a tussock moth, but I'll have to look it up to be sure.

    Thanks for sharing!

Doesn't look much like a tussock moth cat after all, and I haven't been able to find anything else that looks like it yet. Sorry, Karalynn! Hope someone else recognizes it.

The bottom picture is of 2 moths mating. Although now that I look at the picture again it does look a bit like a cat, doesn't it.

Well NO WONDER I couldn't find a caterpillar that was marked like that!!! Hahahahahahaha!! The joke's on me, Karalynn! Now that I look closer, I can see them PLAINLY! Guess I need to wipe off my glasses once in awhile! Maybe this HEAT inside here today has baked my brain cells! However, now that I know what I'm looking at, I still don't know...what I'm LOOKING at! Hehe. I don't recognize these moths, but will keep checking around.

    Still laughing!

Here are some critters from my back yard. I usually take a pic. then ID them using pic. in Internet. So I can be wrong. Feel free to corect me. My all time favorite is Oak Toad, it's absolutely adorable, lives in the corner of my back yard for almost a year. Now I didn't see it for two weeks. I am afraid it ended up in my "friendly" racer stomach.

Here are a couple of critters that I caught running around my yard.

    Eastern fence lizard

Fence lizards are not a bit shy. They come very close and seem to enjoy watching me garden. I talk to them :)

    Six lined racerunner

The racerunners are aptly named. I chased this guy all over my front yard before he finally rested a minute and let me take his picture.

That fence lizard looks like a Robot !

Maureen, I love both of those lizards! I can't remember if it's the fence lizard or another similar one where the males have turquoise sides in the breeding season. The first time I caught one for a closer look, I was astonished at the brilliant blue on the sides of its belly. I don't think it's visible all year, though. Kind of like the big ol' male skinks whose heads turn red in breeding season.

Isn't Nature just marvelous? So many interesting little things living out their lives in our gardens and beyond.

Marcia - yes it is the fence lizards that have the beautiful blue coloration on their undersides. I've seen it a number of times, but hadn't really noticed whether they wear that color just certain times of the year. I'll have to go out and look and see if I can find one with a blue tummy now.

Look, what I just dug out while planting flowers. Isn't it something? It's called Southeastern Toad or something like that, right? "Planted" it back.
