I don't know its name but I believe I have some of it that Cena gave me several years ago. I've made about 3 diff. pieces of it since. 2 of 3 pieces have leaves which start out dark red/brown & green up. One even gets these green dots at the tip of dark new leaves.

I'll see if I have any pix of it.

    Australis tenupe.

In the article I have on Hoya australis written by Foster and Liddle they mention that Hoya australis ssp tenuipes can have bronze new growth but this characteristic does not show up in all plants of this subspecies. If your plant has red/bronze new growth it is pretty safe to call it Hoya australis ssp tenuipes.

I agree. I've got australis ssp. tenuipes and the new growth is nice and bronze when it gets some sun. As it matures, the leaf fades to a bright, lime green. Mine blooms profusely in fall, but for the last couple years, I also get a few blooms in late spring. A few of the peduncles are budding up right now.

I also agree that not all australis ssp. tenuipes gets the red/bronze new growths...I had one for two years (until the brutal winter)killed it this winter...not once did it ever get the red/bronze leaves, I've had it in direct sun and no sun...it didn't make any difference how much light mine got.

I think Australis 'lisa' gets the pretty red "new" red leaves most/all of the time?

    Denise, congrats on your buds!

Anybody up for a trade? Or I could pay shipping. I'd really like to have this particular H. australis.

    Thank so much,

Do you have subcalva? It gets the craziest colored new growth. I would share, if mine weren't being troublesome right now, but here's a pic:

I do have australis ssp Tenuipes, but I only just got it and I don't think it's ready for a cutting yet. I have heard it grows like crazy though, so if someone else doesn't trade with you first, I will when mine is ready to spare a cutting.

Quinn, that is one beautiful leaf! I just love the colors and pattern...very unique! TFS.

Quinn, thanks for the offer, and I will CERTAINLY take you up on that when it's large enough. :) Thank you so much.

And that is a lovely picture of subcalva. And, no, I don't have that one, either. . . Maybe it will be healthy by the time australis is big enought? ;)

Quinn that leaf is awesome, now I am excited to see my Hoya subcalva cutting. I just checked the postal tracking number and it looks like the package is just waiting to clear customs.

When I first saw it, I was surprised. It starts out this reddish or bronze-y pink and slowly turns green. In the pic the leaf is in the process of turning green, but it takes its time, so you get to enjoy it for a while. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that leaf is no longer with me. I had some great growth when I first got it, and then negative growth. Basically, I'm back where I started, minus a leaf but plus a bit of vine. Keeping my fingers crossed that the new nubbins of growth are the start of good things to come. I think it is sensitive to cold, and it was close to my window over the winter. Whoops, didn't know better. It's on a list of hoyas that don't want to get any colder than 70F on one site, and another says no lower than 17C (about 63F). So it really wants to stay warm.

My australis did have some cute little reddish leaves on its new growth. Red tipped with green. It very quickly turned all green though. It was a fair distance away from my window at the time. Now it is on my shelf, south facing window but behind a kerrii. Hope it likes it there.

Just one of those "live and learn" things. :) Hope it's happy in the new location.
