Dancing Lady orchid

I picked up a Dancing-Lady ( oncidium ) orchid on sale, it has one little spray of the pretty little flowers.... I recall a GWer with a gorgeous plant on her porch and when I saw this on sale I grabbed it.... my dilemma is, what do I do with it ? I went on Google and did get some information, sort of generic stuff..... but the plant is in a clear-plastic cup, inside a red-clay pot, and looks crowded, the roots are jammed in, but look healthy...I think.... I hope...... do I take it out of the clear-plastic cup, and if so, what do I pot it up in ? does it go in a wood-basket in Orchid-mix ? or does it go into a larger clay-pot ? or just into plastic-chips and perlite in a wood-basket, so it stays in the air? does it go out under the tree-branches, and how often do I water it ? does it like city-water, or do I save rain-water ? does it go dry between waterings, or do I keep it moist?..... HELP !! I do have a few other orchids out there and they seem to be OK, but reading Google, they all like different treatment...... Thanks, sally

That is such a loaded question. What I mean is you kinda have to think about where are you going to put it, how often do you want to mess with it is it going on patio or under tree? The good thing is they are very easy and reliable bloomers. When I had mine under trees I took everything out of plastic and put it in wood baskets and I think that is a best bet for you no matter where you put it. Pick potting medium that matches your watering style. Clay mediums dry out quickly wood bark which breaks down in a year or so holds moisture. A good medium would probably be a blend if this is your only orchid then go get a wood basket line bottom with some veggie netting or citrus netting and transfer plant after blooms are done. Don't keep plant wet but moist is good and it's ok if it dries out for a day or two till you water it again. I have mine under a tent in a well ventilated space if there is a lack of wind I put a fan on. They get high filtered light. I try and fertilize 1 x a week with week solution. 1 teaspoon per gal of water with some dawn soap mixed in. I have probably totally confused you, sorry. I highly suggest you check out your local orchid club it is very informative and lots of fun and cheap. Our club only charges 15 for the year and you get parties and 3 orchids during the year. Plus they have raffles and in no time you will have hundreds odmf orchids like me. Hope I helped.

Thanks wallisadi ! THAT'S IT - THAT'S IT - THAT'S IT ! ! ! I remembered that gorgeous plant and when I saw it marked down I grabbed it ! but mine is very tiny in a wee pot..... so we can dream and hope, can't we !!! sally

Wallisadi, you seem to keep your Dancing Lady under cover of the porch, how often do you water it ? is it in a wood-slat basket?, or is that a clay-pot ? it looks like two plants hanging there, what do you pot it up in ? oh my, that is one-gorgeous orchid !! thanx, sally

I'm assuming they go inside in winter, right? Well I guess you are in Deland after all.
