H. aff. finlaysonii blooming
My aff. finlaysonii is also blooming. I find this one difficult to get a good picture of because the flowers last for such a short period of time. I love the leaves though. I bought it as finlaysonii but I put aff. in front because it has quite bright green leaves. I usually see them described as being kind of grey.

Original Author17 years agoThanks Denise. I find the Minibelle has a very nice floral scent. I like it better than the regular carnosa.
I'm not sure about this finlaysonii. I didn't get close enough. When the next umbel opens I'll have to try and remember to go out there in the evening.

Beautiful flowers! The cutting you sent me of this Hoya is budding up, the diptera is blooming and padangensis also has buds forming. I have a plant that came to me as Hoya meredithii that was collected in Borneo, might be Hoya callistophylla and it has very similar flowers but more brown almost maroon at the tips of the corollas. I was surprised at how small the blooms are once they are reflexed.
I like the colour of your plants blooms. I have heard that Hoya finlaysonii usually has citrus scented flowers but never smelled them myself. Here is a photo of my plants blooms, quite similar but the leaves are quite different.

Wow Sandy that is gorgeous! I love the pink edges on the flower! Extremely pretty!

How long do the flowers last? My plant of this has done NOTHING since it rooted over a year ago.... Once reflexed do they last at least a couple of days?
Very pretty!

So pretty Sandy! Makes me want to consider adding this plant too. I'm trying to pick just one more that gets really nice large blooms. How big are they all the way around?

Here is a photo of my plant soon after I potted it up some time last year. The small leaves were newly developing but they have since grown larger but darker possibly because I had the plant shaded. The peduncle dropped off during the winter, there has been good growth leaf wise but not much new vine.

I have seen photos of many different Hoya finlaysonii plants and they are all quite different from each other, possibly due to the wide natural range of the species. I think my favorite has to be the small thick leafed variety. The Epiphytica site has photos of four or five different Hoya finlaysonii varieties.Mike

That is one gorgeous bloom!! That is exactly the blooms I hope to get someday? But I really like the leaves also, which is what I will be looking at most of the time, lol
I have the H. finlaysonii and the H. finlaysonii Rippled Leafcolor>. To me, the leaves are quite different from each other. I prefer the leaves on the H. Rippled leaf a lot better, the veins are more pronounced and its a darker shade of green. The blooms are supposed to be the same.
Thanks for posting!

I gotta ask... what does aff. designate? It's not immediately obvious to me, and I can't figure it out.
Also, where does one get these bamboo hoops? I don't think I've seen one in person before. Is it easy to find? I imagine they'd look fabulous with a hoya draped all over one.
Lastly, the veined leaves are gorgeous!

Quinnfyre here is everything you need to know about Hoya abbreviations.
I get the bamboo hoops at Home Depot, they are usually available during the summer in the outdoor garden center but many times they have them all year around.Mike

Thanks Sandy, both pictures are beautiful, but I think I really like it before it reflexes for some reason!
Thanks Mike! Even though it wasn't for me, sometimes I wonder what some of the abbreviations mean too.

Original Author17 years agoEpiphytica sure has a good selection of hoyas. I spent some time browsing through them all. I find the unknown ones interesting. They have some nice finlaysoniis. I like the one with the dark leaf.
That's a really nice leaf on that one Mike. I just got a callistophylla cutting from DL. I don't think the veining is quite as dark as yours. I really like those type of leaves. I have another one that is supposed to have a flower like finlaysonii. It's sp. IML1420. It hasn't bloomed yet. The leaves start out dark then turn quite light. Here's a picture with the aff. finlaysonii in the background. The leaf shape is a bit different...much more pointed at the tip and wider. The new leaf is on the right and an older one on the left.

Puglvr what is the finlaysonii with the rippled leaf? Do you have any pictures?
Yes, I get my bamboo hoops from Home Depot too but you can find them at Canadian Tire sometimes.

Hi Sandy,
I have a very small plant compared to Jan's, it did nothing until about two or three weeks ago, its gotten about four new leaves...so its finally growing a little more. My DD gave it to me for Christmas.
Jan, yours is very nice and really BIG. May I ask where you got yours, how big was it when you got it? Does it grow fast? Thanks!

Jan, yours is absolutely gorgeous and really big. May I ask where you got yours and how old is it? Thanks!

Original Author17 years agoWow, that is a really beautiful plant Jan. It looks so lovely and healthy. I'm interested to know how old it is too. It seems to have a lot more leaves than mine. How tall is the bamboo hoop it's on? Maybe I've just got mine stretched out too long. LOL
Puglvr, yours plant is beautiful too. I'm sure it won't take long before it's a nice big plant. I found that mine started out pretty slowly but once it got going it grew quite fast.
Thanks so much both of you for sharing your pictures. It makes me like those types of leaves even more. I love looking at pictures other people's plants. It's nice to see how they grow them and what the cuttings might look like when they get older.

Pug & Sandy, thank you. I think the plant is about 3.5 years old on 18" hoop. I got this one at Gardino's.
I really love the leaves on this one, the flowers are just a bonus. - 17 years ago
Thanks for the info Jan. My daugther also got mine from Gardino's. I agree the leaves on this one is really pretty, but like you said the flowers are a bonus...but a very nice bonus indeed!

Mike - I am confused. Are you saying the meredithii from Paul is similar to finlaysonii? I have had it on my list since you showed us a photo of it last year. However, I do now have a finlaysonii, so I'm now wondering if there is a point in getting the meredithii too...
Here's my finlaysonii...

Oh, all of the pictures are just beautiful! Hope mine grows some time soon!

Hills my plant is either Hoya meredithii or Hoya callistophylla, have seen it described as both. I have it named Hoya meredithii on the tag because that is what name it came with. I was surprised at how similar the flowers were (other than the flower pedicle length) even though the plants are obviously different species, albeit closely related ones. I thought I would post them more for comparison than anything else. I do find it neat to see everyones Hoya finlaysonii type plants though.
Your finlaysonii looks very different, the leaves almost look textured where as my plant has relatively smooth leaves with only slightly sunken feeling veins. Did your Hoya finlaysonii come from Mr. Shirley? I have not ordered that species from him but he does have two different ones for sale right now. I am way over my Hoya limit for a while but now you have me wondering what his two finlaysonii's look like. I know my Hoya meredithii does not have undulate leaf edges like your plants which is often seen in Hoya finlaysonii.Mike

Hi Mike, No, I did not get my finlaysonii from Paul, I bought it from a swedish vendor on Ebay who was selling buotii, so I thought that I would get another one from her at the same time, and I chose finlaysonii. I don't know where she got it from!
Hmm, my leaves do look different - I wonder whether this is because the plant's trying to establish itself and maybe the roots aren't working as well as they should do, or whether mine is slightly different to everyone else's... only time will tell! - 9 years ago
Hello,
Im in Surrey, BC and looking to buy this beautiful plant ( hoya finlaysonnii) or callistophylla.Anyone selling a cutting or 2 pls let me know. Thank u!!

Are you guys with the beautiful finlaysonii in humid climates? You must be, as I keep hearing it's a humidity lover. I haven't gotten one, as my humidity is sometimes in the single digits!
