Thanks for the article. informative to me since I have three hives.
And... that is great that they are considering on closing the borders on Australian bees.We need more workers. The bees got to be documented.

Ill-Man, I caught a report about that too on the news tonight. It's not just those of you Florida seeing the honey bee decline, but it is all over the nation! I have been fortunate to have a small group around my garden this summer. For some reason, all things flying are finding my gardens a 'must see' stop on their travels, because I have seen more this summer than in the past 2 years. It makes me feel good that I must be doing something right to attract them. Do you think if I left a pencil and note pad on my potting bench, they might write down just it is that attracts them here? Maybe I am just lucky.

Cindee, I saw that on the news tonight, too. We have mentioned in other threads that it is nationwide, and that California is in extremely bad shape. They were thinking they might lose their entire almond crop without the bees. And California produces 80% of the WORLD'S almonds! Imagine that!

At any rate, this could prove to be a real disaster! I'm sure many of us are doing the right stuff to attract them (I've always had them before) but if a virus kills all the bees in a given area, there won't be any to show up. And that's what I fear has happened around here. TWO honeybees for the ENTIRE summer. It's just sad!

Ill, thanks for the link. Very informative article. Always more details to be had than on the tv news.

I have always had soooo many bees, especially aroung my coral vine, but not this year. I have even let my coleus go to flower on purpose, in case they want some of that. I wish I could make them some chicken soup!

Hey guys, perhaps why I have so many honey bees? We noticed a mess of bee hives in a cow pasture close to our home, today. Is that why I see so many?? Is it easy to set up and manage hives? Would be an interesting hobby and keep the population going in a small way.
