Variegated Multiflora

I've not had much luck with Multifloras...until a recent exchange here. I water rooted it and it should be blooming any day! However, I also recently acquired a variegated multiflora cutting and tried water rooting to no avail, so I moved it into a mix of hydroton and perlite and put it in my makeshift rooting chamber with 90% humidity. Checked it last night and the cut ends were rotting, so I cut them off and stuck them back in.

Any tips on rooting the variegated version?

Thanks!

Kelly

    Kelly,

Mine is growing more in potting soil with some perilite. It is outside in semishade, however, I am in Florida so it is probably a little different. It doesn't seem to like as much water as the regular one. I also find it doesn't grow as fast either. I grow my hoya's in orchid mix and they do fine, but this variedgated multiflora just didn't like the free flowing water.

Just what is working for me.

I think bottom heat helps and I try to spray the tops and under sides of the leaves to help the cuttings stay hydrated. I find Hoyas like this dehydrate really easy and the cuttings can look pretty rough compared to most other Hoyas. If the cutting keeps rotting you could try cinnamon on the end. Sphagnum moss is great for rooting stubborn plants and it is naturally anti-fungal.

Thank you both for the advice! I cut the original cutting in two, so maybe I'll try two methods in hoping of saving at least one of them!

Mike, do you use the sphagnum moss in a bag or just loosely in a pot?

    Thanks again!

I don't use sphagnum often for Hoyas but I would still root the cutting in a bag or terrarium. The moss holds lots of water and air so you should only have to soak it and then pot the cutting up and wait. I have see where people just lay moist sphagnum in the bottom of a bag and place the cutting inside and that would work to.

    Hi Kelly,

I remember how encouraging you were about growing these when I posted a picture on another site (Karen_NYC).

Now I have several mature flowering-size variegated Multifloras in 6" semihydro pots with hydroton. If you--or anyone-- can figure out a way to ship it, would be glad to send you one.

You are too kind, Karen! I don't know why Multifloras are so difficult for me! I've killed 4 already - 2 regular, 1 variegated and 1 spotted! So far the regular all green one I have now is growing in water and is well rooted and ready to bloom any day. Have had the variegated one for several weeks now and NO roots at all! Hoping tonight to put on of the pieces in the moss.

If you're interested in doing a trade, send me an email!

Killed two of the variegated Multifloras in dirt, which is why I tried semihydro.

    Trade sounds good. Sending email.
