Watering Hostas

All of my hostas are in full morning sun. This weekend I installed a drip irrigation system with 1/4" soaker hose around each hosta. How often should I run the system?

    hey.. welcome ...

please give us more info ...

is it an engineered drip system

or a porous hose system ...

though it doesnt really matter ... i will answer it anyway ...

you need to get water at least half way through the root zone ...

you turn on the water for an hour.. and then go dig a small hole with a hand trowel .. how deep did the water get ... it will depend on your soil structure ...

hosta prefer.. deep thorough waterings ... rather than a little surface water often ..

so turn the water back on.. and go out there in 2 hours .... dig again ...

sooner or later... you will get water 3 or 4 inches down ...

and you will know how many hours you need .... to get a good base watering ....

once it is damp down deep ... then you need to figure out.. how many days you can skip.. before you need to do another deep watering or how to maintain the moisture at depth ... and again.. that will be a function of your soil.. and mulch if you have any ... and sun.. and wind.. and shade..

so every other day.. go out and hand trowel another small hole on the line.. and see whats happening..

i think you get the point by now...

i say.. watering is an ART.. not a science... based on a multitude of variable in your little microcosm ... we can not tell you how to do it.. you are going to have to intuit from what happens in your yard ....

    good luck

    ken

ps: the only difference with an engineered system... is that you would know that X number of gallons per hour was going thru the drip heads... and you can figure out water usage, especially in pots with engineered potting media .. or make some general predictions of the end result .. but you would still end up digging all the holes ....

It is not an engineered system. I just made rings of 1/4 soaker hose around each hosta.

took me two years to figure out what i wrote you ...

I water mine once a week or during droughts, unless they are newly planted and not yet established, then I pay closer attention. IMO, hostas pretty much take care of themselves.

I don't water in evenings, slugs love it, and will eat them alive. Water in mornings. I suspect yours will need more water since they are in full sun. Do what Ken says.

Slugs don't like used coffee grounds, they won't slither through it. I plan to amend the topsoil with coffeegrounds this year so I don't have to use slug bait.

    My two cents. Good luck.

Last year was the first year I have had any trouble with slugs. I did not have any in the hostas but I had lots in my daylilies. I think it was because I had to many snakes and no toads.
