Yeah, I could post this on the Passiflora forum, but... hey... I like you guys (and gals!) better. Back in April-ish, I planted three varieties of Passionvine seeds, Blue Passionvine, Maypop and Wing-Stemmed Passionvine. Since then, all three have managed to sprout, with Wing-Stemmed being questionable (the leaves don't look like they should from online images)... but that's not my problem.
While doing research on sprouting the seeds, I read that it could be up to two years before I saw any blossoms on my vines. And I was okay with that. But then last week the Maypop vine put out its first flower bud. Needless to say, I was quite excited (I never in my life would have thought that I would get excited about a plant...). So I have been keeping tabs on it, watching as it got bigger and bigger, waiting for it to pop open. During this time I have noticed other buds starting to grow. Then, this morning, I checked on the bud and... it was on the ground... with a little tuft of purple sticking out from the end. I could see no sign of anything having munched on it or any kind of disease or rot. Near as I could tell, the vine just said, "Ptooey" and spat the bud onto the ground.
I will have to keep an eye on the other buds and hopefully one of them will fully blossom, but is it common for a passiflora (or any flowering plant) to simply eject a bud? I haven't seen anything like this with my other plants.
Oh, and there are no signs of any Fritillary or Longwing caterpillars as yet, so I don't think that's the case.
