Yes,they will come back,but will look weird for awhile. I had some of my tender shoots eaten off by a rabbit,when they first came up. All of them have grown back,but with some leaves with cut-off ends. Phil

hosta have very many dormant buds.... they will come back ..

BUT!!! .. they reflush on stored energy .... and the more times they are knocked down.. the smaller the reflush becomes ..

i know this from years of repeated heavy frost/freeze knockdowns ....

Sigh, it makes me ill to look at the stubs. I would post a pic, but why spread the misery? ;) And yes, I had a talk with the yard guys. The one who did it was really young and new. My loss, but not warranting the death penalty for the kid...

I sure hope it recovers...I can't imagine it coming back this year, but maybe it will surprise me. Thanks for the replies!

Did they recover? Just watched my yard guy’s new guy level a hosta i planted last spring outside my home office window with a weed whacker.

It was coming up nice and dense and twice the size…now its confetti. I was on a Zoom call when it happened, my collegues thought I had been shot.

I had that happen two years ago when the young lawn service helper went into my native plant garden beds outside the lawn during spring cleanup and weed whacked all the new growth on the rain garden plants I had just planted the prior fall. When I ran out to tell him to stop, he pointed to my destroyed golden groundsel and creek sedge and said he was just cutting back the weeds.

They are no longer allowed in the garden beds. Everything has now grown back and started to naturalize.

John, yes, they recovered and are still alive and kicking 11 years later! I have some others planted more recently in another area that just disappeared (did not emerge in the spring). I’m sick about losing them, but apparently some voles were starving. They wiped out an entire bed from below the ground. Ugh.

Ditnc, I had that happen in 2016. I completely lost a 5'-in diameter 'Atlantis' and nearly lost all others (about 15). I nursed the remaining ones back to health over a year or so. I now have them all in pots, partially submerged into the earth. It inhibits the size of the giant ones, but not as much as the killer voles did.
