Fig Tree

Found a Magnolia Fig tree at a big box store this afternoon. Can I grow one in a pot on my patio? I don't have enough yard space with sun, darn it!

Perhaps and expert will chime in on this. But I believe the answer is yes, you can do that. My fig tree is in the ground. But I have seen many other members of the genus ficus grown in pots quite easily. I would think that carica would be no different. Fig trees are generally tough and seem to be pretty adaptable to a variety of conditions. I doubt you will have trouble at all. You can prune it very easily too, by the way, and I have seen some beautiful ficus bonsai work too. Best of Luck!

Short answer is yes. There is a fig forum for more info and another great site is

Most edible figs are recommended to be grown in pots here due to the nematoads in the soil.

Giants - your pic was a little dark-I lightened it up to show how well your potted trees were doing.

You have a nice mini fig farm there, congratulations!

Let us know about the varieties you have and which one is your favorite and does better in this weather.

I have 2 figs on the ground now. One very small is Alma and I like the taste. The other one is Brown Turkey, quite large and I am not happy with the taste.

I am planning to get more figs and put them in a pot, maybe they have a better taste where I can control the soil.

When I went to the u-pick farm, I tried Celeste, Texas Everbearing, and a white variety. All I can say I had better figs than those.
