Your plant may be Thai basil (a.k.a licorice basil). I like to keep little bouquets of it on my breakfast bar. As you mentioned, the flowers are pretty and it smells so nice. Mine also self-seeds.

There are many cultivars of Thai basil. One of the prettiest is supposed to be Siam Queen. I think the variety you and I have, however, is probably a more common one.

The one on the left looks like my Thai basil. I think I picked mine up at Home Depot so if you found yours at a big box store it's likely to be the same or at least a similar cultivar. It's great added to chicken broth soups with some lemon grass and noodles!

Now I know what I've got. . . and I've got a lot of 'em! I've potted up all the seedlings that I've found sprouting in my other container plants.

I get so many plants dropped off at my house by folks - like gifts, even though most of them look dead or close to dead - and I always try to resucitate every one of them. That is why I have so many to ID!

So I really appreciate my Florida Garden Web family.
