What variety bamboo is this? Is it invasive? Does it get any thicker?

This is Phyllostachys nigra or Black Bamboo - very common.
It is a "runner" variety of Bamboo, so yes it spreads thicker, and with ultimate conditions (eben moisture and sun) it WILL SPREAD! it can be contained in pots or barriers.
These photos were taken shortly after planting in 2008.
Be aware, even Bamboos considering creeping will spread - they are from the grass family.
Another gorgeous dark bamboo is Henon, Blue Bamboo
Here's just one grower's web site ( be aware, they're kind of "odd", lol)

    Hope this helps
