Hoya sp.

Okay, so I received this cutting . . . Hoya sp. IML 1660. It's a finlaysonii. Just wondering if anyone knows if it's got a name other than sp. 1660?

Thanks so much!

Carolyn are you hoping to find specific collection data? If you already know that it is Hoya finlaysonii there is little else you might find out other than where it was collected. Is it just perhaps in the finlaysonii complex but without posative ID?

Mike, I really and truly think that is the case. No "name" as yet. Just collection data. Just wanted to know if there was a specific name, yet.

I was asking because I've been looking for sp. Maenam for over a year, only to realize it's been in my collection for longer than I've wanted it, listed as sp. 1420. Go figure!

I think it's best to not get hung up on the collection site unless it's something that really stands out. Having said that there are many cases where a particular collection site hosts a more beautiful variety of a species than the commonly available form.
Sometimes reading descriptions in the various Hoya price lists does little to give a good visual of said species. I think if you are going to take a chance on unidentified species you will often be pleasantly surprised but every so often you will end up with something disappointingly familiar.

I do like seeing the collection sites, because sometimes there are a whole grouping of different Hoyas from that spot that have the same cluster of attractive features, despite being clearly distinguishable plants.

Or else, sometimes I'll fall in love with a plant from a region that performs really well for me, so I'll be more curious than usual about its neighborhood plants, with the expectation that they might also perform well in my conditions. Sometimes this is unrealistic, depending on how large or diverse the "location" is, but it's just one more cog turning in my head as I make decisions based on forever too little information.

    Carolyn,

I have this hoya (got it on last years order) it came labeled as IML 1660 sp.. Betong Thailand "finlaysonii" this is all I know about it though

Well, that's more info that I had before! ;) I'll put it all on the tag, just for good measure

David....that's very valuable information...so much better than simply an IML number!!

Can one of you please put a picture of IML 1660? google does not help with this one.

    thanks

LOL That's an understatement. All my search queries pull up for IML 1660 are Japanese soft porn doodles. As far as I can tell, Carolyn's new cutting really likes lollypops. Perhaps all the finlaysonii complex does.

I just got back in from looking for my IML 1660 and apparently it is one of those hoyas that I lost over the winter as I can not find it anywhere. I do recall it struggling to hang on ever since it first arrived so it looks like i don't have it after all!!!

Your finlaysonii looks like a teenager on their way to a rave with those dragonfly clips on it's vines and those suckers. LOL

OMG! Guys, when I started this thread, I had a SERIOUS question!

BUT . . . GG and Quinn, I LOVE what you've done with it! Thanks! Totally made my day better. I think I'll go buy some lollipops and high heels, now. HAHAHAHA JUST KIDDING!

    LOL!

Oh man. I love you Quinn.

    & lolz Mike.

This whole complex is now +1

Ha ha, I couldn't resist. Strangely enough, the only reason I have those lollipops is because the company I ordered drip irrigation supplies from sent them to me. And I ordered things from them a few times, and they sent some each time, so it's definitely their thing. It's nice, but odd too... I don't think of candy when I think of drip irrigation systems, do you?

    Very funny, Mike! :)

    LOL

That is an amusing lollipop source. Perhaps the underlying message is that lollipops ARE plant supplies.

I have to say that if every time I dropped a grand on potting medium, they threw in a package of pop rocks, that would tip the balance on who I ordered from.

If I had a grand to drop on potting medium... I wouldn't be getting potting medium ;) Hey, I haven't seen pop rocks in a while. I think they still make them, right? I feel like I saw a Mythbusters episode with them at some point. Also, I want to try the Mentos and Diet Coke thing for myself sometime. Preferably well away from my house. I already have ant problems without giving them more temptations.

Carolyn, what DOES your lollipop loving finlaysonii cutting look like? Inquiring minds want to know. Is it like a typical finlaysonii, or is there something uniquely different about it?

    I'll take a pic sometime, tomorrow. :)

    Carolyn

They DO still make them! I thought they'd discontinued them, too, since I hadn't seen them since I was a kid, but apparently they made a comeback because all the sudden I started to see them everywhere... at Targets and gas stations and stuff. Not so much anymore, but once I knew they were still around, it was not so easy to forget about them a second time.

I second the vote for more kinky finlaysonii pics.

Well, here's a picture of sp. 1660 . . . she seems to be more into the flavored lip smackers . . . I guess she's THAT KIND of finlaysonii. hehehe

    Carolyn

Ha ha ha! Your finlaysonii does look quite different than mine. Mine is more subtle in veining. It's more like the veining is evident due to the shape of the leaf, rather than distinct lines. And yours seems to have a flatter leaf with a pointier shape. I find finlaysonii, as a whole, fascinating. Maybe if I had a greenhouse I would start collecting them.

I wonder if Dr. Pepper lip smackers really do taste like Dr. Pepper...

Thanks for the Pop-Rocks link GG!

Why didn't they have Extreme Sour flavor when we were kids?
So sour your mouth is puckered shut as a small pop-rocks carnival is exploding within! Even better, it comes in 48 count! That's 48 unique sour, exploding experiences... We had a deprived childhood!

Uh oh, Carolyn. Lip smackers are a gateway drug. Soon she'll need a Tokidoki backpack and goth-loli outfits from Japan.

    /Quinn

I totally agree that it would be a lot of fun to have a whole assortment of finlaysoniis. They all seem easily distinguishable from one another and there's just... no end to the flavors.

    /Begonias

LOL You make a good point about the sour pop rocks. I don't think sour really blossomed as a "thing" for candy until I was past prime candy age. When I was a kid only sour balls were sour. I bet if I handed one of today's kids a sweet candy they'd view it the way I used to look at sassafras sticks at school field trips.
