Not 'June', ID needed

This Hosta was given me with a 'June' label. I've been told it is definitely not 'June'. Your help is appreciated. Thank you

Carol

Wow, that is an absolutely beautiful June.

Last summer I had someone also tell me that my June wasn't a real June. They said that the REAL June have unusual blue-green stripes down the center of the leaves in the yellow part. I was happy to correct them and explain that a June with blue-green stripes down the center is a diseased plant!

Hi Carol you have a beautiful June.
I have found that my mature June changes slightly each year. The color intensifies, either blue or gold, with the weather conditions. Very nice plant.

Chris that was a good answer...very funny!

Thank you, all! A member of the Hosta Society was adamant that this wasn't 'June'. I've been told 'June' has bright yellow in the center of the leaves by another person. I will now set them straight.

WOW that is a nice hosta. Here is a pic of mine that I planted in April. Can't wait till it looks like yours!

If June is planted in full sun, then the leaves are yellow in the center. The color of June varies greatly depending upon the amount of sun/shade. Don

According to Jim Anderson of Winterberry Farms there are two types of H.'June. I purchased several as tc's and type 1 has a bright gold center and a thinner, blue margin. Type 2 is the more typical gold with the wider streaked blue margin. The best way to describe type 1 is H.'May' with a 3/4" blue margin. So everyone may be correct after all.

Reinforces why June remains my favorite and why I keep giving it as gifts.

I've taken the same clump, divided it into two, and planted one half against the north side of my house and the other half in full sun. They don't even look like the same hosta now. The half that's in full sun is bright yellow in the middle and the other half is like the picture carol posted. Don

    that is june
    i love that one

OK, you've convinced me. Now I'm going to move a piece to a more sunny location.
    Thanks!

Dave (midohio) you need to post a pic of yours--the most beautiful 'June' I've ever seen
    in person!!!!!

Here she is from a couple years ago. Most of her neighbors have gone on to a better place, though she likes King Tut so he got to stay.

    Janice made me do it!!

Ahhh--photos don't do her, justice---you need to zoom in on one of those leaves, Dave!
Honestly--when I saw her, the leaves were very large and the margins were striping into
    the soft yellow so beautifully!!!

I guess you had to be there! Thanks Dave!!!!:o)

You know--I might have a photo from when we visited you! I'll look for it tomorrow, if I think of it.
We have grand-boys doing an over-night and I hear them having entirely too much fun for this hour
of the night!!!! Gotta run save the walls!!!

Okay question about 'June'. Most of the young ones I've seen have had thinner margins than the one above. But I've seen one at a local nursery that I said was 'June' based on pictures I've seen on the net that looked just like the one pictured above. The owner said she got it as 'June' a while ago, but others have told her it isn't. Should I try to get a division of her plant or will my thinner margined younger plant look like that in the future. I want those thick margins! thanks, Dan

Steal her plant if you like the thicker margins!!! lol
Someone recently posted pics of 4 different versions of June. (I found it and posted a link to that thread. EO posted the pics of the 4 together and a beautiful mature one, too.) If you add Deebs pic from that thread, which has a more narrow border than the ones EO posted, that makes 5 versions! Whatever it looks like small is pretty much what it will look like big, just more of it.

My June has sported and part of it is now producing a MUCH thinner margin. That part is still good looking, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original with the thicker margin, and is much smaller also. You can see both in this pic.
    {{gwi:980849}}

If all of the other versions would get named we could eliminate a lot of confusion. The plant Carol posted a pic of is gorgeous and I vote for it being the "official" June.

Dave, thanks for the info. I kind of thought that, but was hoping that my 'June' would eventually turn into the 'June' of my dreams. Fortunately I have some rare conifers that I can trade for the 'June' that I want. She's pretty cool too. Might have to wait until fall, but I'm pretty sure I'll get a fair trade. Thanks, Dan

I've posted pics of and discussed my June on another hosta forum....I bought it the year or two after it was introduced commercially into the U.S. and, as far as I can tell from examining photos of the various versions, it's the "official" June. It looks like Carol's, with the same wide margins.

Looks like a June to me too, this one gets almost full sun.

I have the same problem. Please help.

This one was labeled as "June" when I bought it for my mother a few years ago. My younger sister says it is NOT "June" because it looks different than hers (I think it's a amount-of-sunlight thing). My mom has a green arm, my sister and I have green hands but I don't have actual dirt so sister tends to win out (I only have FABULOUS containers at my townhouse). I buy perennials for my mother so when I have a garden, someday before I turn 50 (and I'm closing in on that), I can get a piece of everything back from her! Of course, it I hit 60 without my very own dirt, I'll just move in with her (she thinks she will move in with me).

So, what do you all think? I think I will tell my sister that HERS is not "June." Ha!

    Thanks,
    Lisa

    Looks like June to me.

    Mine in western CT...

No pre-picture grooming done, looks like! And the suspect Striptease has been moved from behind.

For me, it's June. Always, always June...

oooooooo...inlimbo, I love those little Japanese ferns mixed it! See, your margins are thicker...or is that just a sunlight thing?

Hey 'regattagirl'! Welcome!!! Glad to see you got the photo posting figured out!!! You're doing good and what a start with that 'beauty'!!!

Awesome 'June' pics. everyone---easy to see why we all love it so much!!!!

Regattagirl - no they are definitely thick --

This June got plopped in this location to save it from a vole-infested bed last year - the plan was two Striptease, Japanese painted ferns, some dark eupatoriums, brunette cimicifuga, some cute new perennial geraniums with dark leaves & pulmonaria near the peegee hydrangea standard, BIG BUTT...

Striptease got hvx, so they are comng out, and I like June with the painted ferns better anyway! Planning on plum pudding heuchs in the Striptease holes, though I would rather have other hostas, but experts here say no hostas in holes where hvx has lived... I'm also liking hey j's lamium.

Plus, I painted the shed a very dark blue-green and June looks just mahvelous... also plopped in 3 tall white astilbe that I thought needed way more water and less sun than they get, but they are thriving...

This isn't the right angle to show the whole bed, but does show shed color & the lovely Miss June who has grown bigger.... that's the climbing hydrangea that plans to devour CT in the foreground...

Gardening is happy accidents, isn't it?

Just greaaaattttt, because that's my "other" problem. I need dirt AND a gardening shed too! Love yours. I actually collect magazine articles and photos of other peoples'. One thing, though, I do have after all these years is gardening significant!

So I have been lurking a lot on this forum and I "just now" ran out to the nearby garden center and picked up "Blue Mouse Ears." Because of reading about all of you, and looking at your photos and seeing the past EXCHANGES (I feel faint), I just HAD to DO something hosta related. Almost bought astilbe and plum hooch, too ("hooch" is what I call heuchera and I call clematis "climb latters").

This my mother will be getting a 4th-of-July present (not taking it to BFs house because, I mean, um..., what if we'd break up?!?!). I'm also putting in a brick edge around her flower garden this weekend. I already did the hosta garden and about killed my back and knees. She's too old to do all that bending but that reason doesn't make me young enough!

Anyway, these are some other "unknowns" from her garden, circa 2007. She canNOT kill a plant. They LOVE her and always do as she says.

She doesn't know the names unless I memorize them. She always throws out the tags for anything I bring her, which has been frustrating for me since technically she's babysitting them until I get some actual dirt (ahem). She is just now starting to "get" collecting different ones. I read another post somewhere here on the hosta forum that someone has one for every letter of the alphabet. What a hoot!

So these are the best I can describe them...

99% sure this is Golden Tiara
    {{gwi:980862}}

    Unknown Large
    {{gwi:980864}}

    Another Unknown
    {{gwi:980866}}

    Unknown Large Blue
    {{gwi:980868}}

By the way, botanybabe and hey_j helped me with the photo posting (thanks) but they may have created a MONSTER.

    Flowers,
    Lisa

LOL Lisa---we love monster anything! Just look at some of the monster hosta and monster collections folks have!

Your pictures and hosta are really AWESOME!!

I'm guessing, but I think the second hosta pictured, 'may' be an 'Earth Angel', if it's fairly young or perhaps one of those
in the 'American Halo', 'Northern Exposure' realm! Is that possible?

Could the second be 'September Sun', or a young 'Paradigm'?

I'm 99% sure you're right on the 'Golden Tiara' and is the last one very recent--if so, it might be 'Blue Angel' or if it's a tad
older but still this year, maybe 'Elegans'?

I'd wait for others to weigh in on those--definitely not an expert and others are!!!

#2 is September Sun. Definitely. 100% sure. Positively. Well, maybe. OK, it was just a guess!
    Dave

Gosh, thanks for the nice comments.

Each of those is probably at least 3 years or more in their locations at the time of the photo (2007) and very well established. Those two really large ones have leaves bigger than my hand spread out and I can reach and piano octave plus 2 keys! (No, I don't have man hands...HA!)

This weekend, I'll take a picture of the entire hosta bed.

I am always so amazed at how nice gardening people are!

    Lisa

Oh my goodness Regattagirl, those are spectacular - mom's got a gift!!

Glad you like my shed - have been working on improving its looks - last year a shake roof & this a paint job. Next, gotta find shutters to hide its ugly metal window - too tacky!

You must get dirt - nothing like owning your own...

Dave...thanks for the September Sun call out (for "Another Unknown", right?). Personally, I think you nailed it.

inlimbo...you are right about the dirt. I call my BF's backyard "heaven" when he lets me dig. This is the first time in my life that my significant other is a gardening type which is a really special experience. I tell him I think he dates me for gardening help and he should be nice to me because I just might send him an invoice. Can you imagine playing with gardens for a LIVING???

And yes, my mother is an amazing gardener and so far it's been somewhat genetic but I don't know for sure because until I have acreage, I'm POT BOUND!!! She started me very young in the large flower and vegetable gardens on our farm. Four of five of her children are natural gardeners and we are all working on the other one.

People driving by her house actually pull over, come up the walk, go in her backyard and sometimes pose to take photos in front of her John Cabet Rose (also a gift from me). Residents (and nuns) at the extended care facility about 2 blocks away make her garden their destination - and sometimes that's by wheel chair! Even though she definitely does know what she's doing, I'm taking some credit for these photos - I've learned not to use the flash because it washes out the colors!

OOPS! I see hey-j called out 'September Sun' first! And based on the rest of her analysis, because these are older plants, I wonder if she is right about

On hey-j's guesses for "Unknown Large" if I use hostalibrary.com, then it's closest to 'Northen Exposure' but still doesn't seem quite right because those margins seem bigger than my photo.

And the big blue one could be either 'Blue Angel' or 'Elegans'!!!!

I'm going to have to collect bloom data...what fun! I can't believe how you all just KNOW these.

Not a problem to me, Lisa---just glad you might be narrowing down the possibilities!
Don't you just hate it when you don't know their names!!!!

When I don't know there names, I just call them George!!

"A member of the Hosta Society" Maybe that person should give up there membership!! I agree with everyone here!! Love that plant!!

The "unknown large blue" looks identical to my Blue Mammoth. I do also have Blue Angel, Bressingham Blue, & Elegans, and they're all different from this one.

digs57....You don't happen to have photos to share of your big blues???
