So What Are They Eating This Early?

I try to make my garden inviting. But I can't imagine what an early hummingbird would eat should she arrive today. With the exception of my feeder, of course.

Even the wild honeysuckle is just starting to bud. Same with the honeysuckles we planted. Will they visit the flowering trees such as cherry or my ornamental peach? Violas? Early flowering bulbs like hyacinth?

They will visit early flowering trees and shrubs. Currants and quince a beginning to bloom I believe and it won't be long for the red buckeyes, Rhododendrons and azaleas to be blooming. They also eat tiny insects that collect around sap holes made by sapsuckers.

My bleeding heart is now starting to bloom so that's another possibility. The flowering quinces have been blooming the past week now too. One of my sisters inherited an old spring-blooming Camelia when she moved into her house in Delaware County about 5 years ago and she said it has just started blooming. Heck - I bet the hummers could hang out at some of the big box store and nursery outdoor garden sections and have quite a meal! LOL

I have been seeing a myriad of insects out now too as Penny indicated, and that is their staple diet.
