My magnifica smelled very floral, and not like horse stables at all no matter how close or far you were to the plant.

FG, everyones' "smeller" is different. I grow two different australis ssp. and they both smell absolutely fabulous to me. And then there are several Hoyas whose fragrance people describe that I can detect no smell whatsoever, in spite of the fact that I feel I have a pretty sensitive nose. Some people hate the fragrance of pubicalyx 'Pink Silver', which smells very musky to me, but I love the smell. My step-grandmother had an old carnosa and when it would bloom over her sink, she would stand there and drink in the smell while her husband wouldn't even go in the kitchen until it was done blooming. It's very subjective. I think you have to grow a species until it blooms, and if you find the smell delicious, you keep it, if you find it offensive, you either get rid of it or you "nip" the buds before they open.

That's a funny story about your step-grandmother's carnosa. I like the fragrances of publicalyx and carnosa, but they're kind of like friends you have to introduce with caveats like, "Oh, you'll love Mark - he's super intense and awkward, but he has the best brain!" They just aren't fragrances where you can confidently say, "You will loooooooooooove it!"

I think it's because most Hoya fragrances are complex - pairing notes we associate with "floral fragrance" alongside notes we associate with stuff like "decay" "food" and "spice." And the combinations often feel quite contradictory - like a kid gone mad in a perfumery. Let's try... dandelions, decomposing spinach, and marshmallows. Now we'll do⦠grapefruit, lilac, and moldy socks!
