Navy Mom they removed the report from R.I. so I guess it wasn't confirmed. Hope I didn't get your hopes up too high. There are two confirmations in NY State. One in Orange county and one in Steuben county in Corning which is about 2 hrs. from me.

I think they've forgotten me this year!!!! WAAAAAAAA! I'm so jealous of the people who have them farther north than me! But I can feel their joy too!!! Any day now!

Not only have I been looking at this year's map with eagerness and impatience--(or, should I say, Impatiens!), but I've also been looking at previous years. It's the same story, more or less, every year. The hummers go up the east coast, and also move up the Mississippi valley, mostly avoiding the more northerly parts in between. This means that most of the time, the western 2/3 of Pennsylvania, and also most of West Virginia have to wait a few days longer than our more northerly neighbors to the west and east. Every year, there are hummers in New England, and Chicago, but not necessarily any in western PA. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

This makes me curious about the wintering grounds for our local hummingbirds, but I guess there probably just isn't enough banding data for the scientists to have figured this out.

I got some more flowers today-- some deep magenta Dianthus chinensis, some perennial blue/purple Verbena, and also some vibrant, magenta Phlox subulata. I don't know if the low-growing subulata will attract my little friends, but it sure looks pretty.
