Hmm...Alliums are similar to tulips and daffodils in that they do need some freeze-time in order to pop up again the next year and after. We simply don't have that much time like that in Florida.

However, I think it's an interesting EXPERIMENT and we'll see what happens! It will probably grow and bloom this year and then go dormant--their bloom period is very short.

I experimented with gladiolus and they rebloomed the next few years without any problem--they actually grew into bigger colonies!

So I would say that alliums are not tried-and-true necessarily, but it's ok to try one...see what happens. If they don't work then you can definitely grow lily-of-the-nile (agapanthus) for a similar look! Oh...and they like heat and bloom much longer!

i've planted a Allium roseum (Rosy Garlic) and Allium neapolitanum (Naples Garlic). neither were perennial in my zone, and the one season of blooms i got from them was blah.

my advice -- don't bother with alliums (well, except society garlic, which is a great filler!)

why not try sparaxis, ranunculus and freesia? better suited bulbs, tho none do as well as they do in CA. a good source for these is easytogrowbulbs.com. plant them all SOON.

What can it hurt to try? I have hostas in my porch and glads in the garden. Just picked a lovely yellow and purple ruffled glad!At the Master Garden conference they had the Daffodil Society selling what else but daffodils. They did say Orlando and above so I didnt even bother but I am SO over daffodils and tulips.
I like to try things that aren't suppose to make it but remember with the Climate ChangeAKA Global warming we do not really know what the future brings. I say plant it and expect a big ball of prettiness!
