Marcia - You can cut Plumbago to within 6" of the ground and it will come back. They need full sun and not as much water as you'd think for best flowers.

Thanks for the advice, Ricky. My plant probably doesn't get as much sun as it needs. I may buy another plumbago for the sunnier front yard and hope for better results.

Mine always freeze back in the winter and come back in the Spring after I prune all the dead stuff off.

I "pruned" mine nearly to the ground with the intent to remove it, but I didn't dig it up. It came back lush and healthy so I decided to keep it. My plumbagos are at least 10 years old. They are probably much older than 10 years because they were huge overgrown scary bushes when we moved here.

That's good to know, Ritaweeda and Amberroses. I'll take my pruners to them today :)

Mine get raggedy during the winter due to frost and freeze. I give them a very hard prune every March, leaving about one-foot branches. (I actually do that to almost all of my plants every March: a hard prune and first application of fertilizer.) Since plants have a giant burst of growth every March/April, they all come back lush and full. By the way, this is one of the those plants where you can really see a response to fertilizer. The leaves become a much darker green and the flowers a darker blue when fertilized. (If no fertilizer, they have light blue flowers and light green leaves.) The trade-off, of course, is more growth and more pruning. :)

Thanks, Carol. I pruned it down already because I couldn't stand to look at it anymore. :) I'm sure it could use some fertilizer. Maybe I'll start with some weak Miracle Grow.
