Hoya macrophylla

Can someone tell me why the flower color on these two different macrophylla hoyas are different?

The form of both flowers looks slightly different too if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me!

I remember before mine flowered (white and purple) someone said the flowers would be a dusty rose color, but that wasn't the case.

I wonder how many other different colors this hoya can flower!

Do the plants themselves look identical? Leaf shape? I imagine that clones from different areas probably have slight variations in flowers as well as leaves. You know, my macrophylla (plain green form) has the wide, heart-shaped leaves. But the ones I see mostly in the trade are the ones shaped more like the variegated mac I have - more oblong, less wide. Like leaves vary depending on where the original plant was collected, I'm sure the flowers do, too.

That sure is Gorgeous!! I have the variegated Macro though it hasn't flowered yet...maybe next Spring? Mine is growing pretty well so far. I will have it one year next month.

    Is yours Variegated or Reg.?

Nice blooms, I like the colour of the blooms in the second photo. The second plant also has much more defined red margins to the leaves so it may just have more red pigment in the plant and flowers. Are the plants both grown in the same intensity of light or were the plants blooming in different seasons? Any plant grown from seed will have traits of both parents so seed grown plants or plants found in nature can show quite a large amount or variation.

    Hey Denise,

The leaves are a little different, mine seems to have a few more cross lines making a more waffle or box patteren.

Not the best photo, but you can what I mean.

Your explanation sounds like a good one, I have read that temperature can effect flower color such and lilies, so maybe it's possible for certain hoyas to have changes because of where and how it was grown, as well as being Seed grown and light. Maybe a combination of these contribute to flower color and subtle leaf changes.

I own the first hoya which I bought online, the second is a "photo" I found online, so I can't tell you how that one was grown.

    Thanks puglvr1,
Yes, my macrophlla (first photo) is variegated.

Plants produce red pigments as a sort of sun block, without it sun burn and DNA damage can occur. Some plants are better equipped to produce these pigments but light and temperature are definitely factors that influence flower and leaf coloration.
