New plants

Hello All!

I found this site a couple of weeks ago and I love it! You guys re-kindled my love of hoyas...so mush so that I ordered 6 from a seller on ebay that you all have mentioned. My question is I have never mail ordered hoyas before. They arrived in great shape but where dry. I watered them with some b-1 and am letting them chill!

From what I have read most of you transplant almost immediately. They are all in 4" pots-4 of them are rooted cutting and 2 are quite filled out-if that makes any sense.

An advice would be much appreciated!

If you got them from drmichael, you probably won't need to repot right away. His soil is just fine.

Sadly no...I discovered his after the fact! I noticed the bidding is hot and heavy for his lovely plants.

I received mine from the Cowboy guy. The plants are great-no problems as of yet. They perked up after their b1 drink!

I have read so information on this site that my brain is totally befuddled!!! lol Two times I looked up at the windows and dang if it wasn't getting light out!
I never new that growing hoyas had become such an art! I had 6 many moons ago. 5 hung out side facing north under a 5 foot eve. 1 was the variegated Hindu rope and 1 was the non-variegated form. I can't remember what the other 4 were but the 6th one was in the house. It was blind potted and hung in a corner stretching 13' one way and 15' the other and hung down 4'in the corner. I know I didn't use a special soil mix on any of them and I never had bugs. I would just hose the outside ones off. They also got fish emulsion every couple of weeks. I feel like I had dumb luck!!!

Now I am just totally "corn-fussed" about what to plant them in and what to feed them! Tooooooo much info!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I have learned ALOT! I love this forum!
I still have questions and if you guys can tolerate them. You can just send me to the threads! I have gotten side tracked sooooo many times I can't remember where I read what. Your pictures of all your plants are just spectacular!
Ok...guess I best stop rambling and get some sleep!

    Hello Everyone!
I have a couple of things that I need help with. I guess the first would be directed to David.

I have been reading a lot and have found 3 basic beer fertilizer recepies. I noticed that David adds molasses and B-12 and I would really like to try it out.

    1. On the B-12 is it 500 mcg or mg as I can only find mcg.
    2. Can you use this on anything? Like gardenias, mandavillas, hibiscus, veggies, daylilies, iris and other things with tubers, bulbs etc.
    3. Is it only for things in pots?
    4. Do you have an ant problem? We are sitting on a massive ant colony and they get into everying and with the molasses I am wondering if it will make it worse. Contrary to "there must be a pest" to have ants in your pots or plant just is not true! I don't know who started that...lol
    5. Can you use it on newly rooted cuttings or do you dilute it more?
      I guess that's enough for that question...for now! ;)

I have been trying to find some neem oil. I don't know how I had never heard of the stuff! I live in the San Diego area and if anyone lives around here and knows where one might get it it would be mush appreciated, otherwise I guess I shall be ordering it off the net.

The fir bark that you all has been hard to find also. Hommy depot has large bark and a smaller bark but I do not know if this is it. Orchid bark is in small bags and way to expensive. I do have a limited driving area, due to my old Fix Or Repair Daylily or Found On Road Dead, take your pick!!!

I am so excited to be growing these lovly plants again that I found myself with 14 all of a sudden! I have no Idea how that happened! hehehhee
As before Thanks for asny help in advance!

Hi Cosmic, I can't answer your Beer fertilizer questions, but I can comment on the Neem and Pine Bark that I use. I bought mine at Lowe's and its made by 'Greenlight' click on this to see the one I use Neem. The Pine Bark I've purchased at my local nursery and Walmart in a HUGE bag...I pay $3 and it goes a long way. Fir Bark is excellent also, but I've never found a large bag for sale here. They do however sell small bags of Fir bark(for Orchids) at the local big box stores, I believe many here use them.

Here's a picture of the Pine bark I use...I do screen mine to get rid of all the fine/tiny dust particles that can clog up my potting mix. I just use a household aluminum strainer that I purchase at the housewares dept.

I also have heard of people using repti-bark sold at Pet stores...like Petsmart. Its Fir Bark and not treated with anything and not harmful to plants...and you don't have to sift or strain it...NO dust or small particles but it is a lot more expensive than what I use. Click on it so you can what the bag looks like. HTH!

    puglvr1!

Thanks so much for your help! I made it to Wally World and most of their stuff was gone...I guess they think we are heading for a deep freeze and don't need to plant any more. I did how ever find, thrown in a corner, some bags of bark for mulching...all large except for one and it said small so I grabbed it. I figure if it is still to big I'll take a hammer to it! I felt like I was in a gourmet grocery store for mulch tho! They had colored dark bark, red colored bark, shredded cedar bark, chopped and chunk rubber and a couple others that I can't remember!

I also traded in my old chariot for as newer used chariot and the first place I went was Lowe's! They where out of neem oil...grrrr...the clerk looked it up to see if they had some and guess what...they stopped ordering it! Discontinued...but there where 9 bottles at a store further away. He could not understand why they would do that as he also used it and found it to be "the best stuff ever." Off I went to the other Lowe's. When I found it they only had 5 bottles left so I bought 2. You might check your Lowe's to see if they also stopped ordering it-maybe they are going to order a different brand. So thanks so much for your help...without it and my newer old chariot I would be neemless...lol

If I may ask what do you guys consider a big box store and what does HTH mean? Also should I start a different thread for my beer fert questions as I really need to know. I have everything you need to make it. Just yes or no on most of them would help alot...Pleasssssseeee and Thank You Again!

Hi Cosmic...You're most welcome and glad I was able to help.
HTH (means: Hope That Helps), just a shortcut,lol...
Big box stores usually we refer to places like Home Depot, Lowe's or Walmart...Big Chain stores. I'm sure there are others out there as well. I will have to look at my Lowe's and see if they discontinued Neem here also. They did that with my Fish Emulsion...I love it for my outdoor plants and they quit carrying it. Makes me mad!

Remember to sift those dust off the small Pine Bark so your mix doesn't hold too much water...wear a mask so the dust doesn't blow back in your face :o)

I would go ahead and start a new post and Title it Beer Fertillizer questions...hopefully you will get your questions answered. Good luck!

    Hi puglvr1!
I totally forgot about the dust from sifting! I do have some masks...Thanks for the reminder...

Wallymart carries a Fish Emulsion in a gallon jug and a smaller bottle. It is the good old fashion brown stinky one! I just tried it out 2 weeks ago and the plants at the kids place are going bonkers!!! I use to use it all the time many moons ago...didn't find it again for a long time...so happy to find it as it sure makes the plants happy!!!

If I may ask where in central Fla do you live? I lived in Melbourne when I was in 3rd grade and then in Titusville from 1964-69. Are all the bugs still there? lol

Hi Cosmic, I live in Highlands County...two hours south of Orlando. Yes, bugs haven't moved out yet,lol...they're all still living here :o)...Want me to send you some? Just let me know.

Unfortunately, my Walmart stopped carrying them last year, maybe they'll bring it back next Spring? My outdoor container plants loved it! Wouldn't dare use it on my inside ones, my DH would probably move out.

Oh Wow! You are really in big bug land!
I'll never forget the evening Mom and I where sitting in the screened-in porch with a friend and we heard this loud buzzing...next thing we knew the end screen was totally covered with these 3 to 4 inch brown bugs! Our friend laughed and said that they where palmetto bugs...I looked at them closer and screamed "those are cockroaches-FLYING COCKROACHES!" She laughed again and said she didn't want to freak us out but yeah they be cockroaches! What a sight-a sight I hope I never see again!!! lol

You may keep your bugs as we are getting quite a collection here due to all the plants that have been brought here. We where originally a semi-arid desert but with all the planting etc. we have all these micro climates
and more humidity and more humidity mean more exotic bugs! Maybe I can send you some! heheheee
